GERMAN CLAIMS IN FIJI.
London, March 4. The Anglo-German Commission, vrho have adjudicated upon the claims of the German subjects in Fiji, and upon the working or the Western Pacific Order-in-Oouncil, will assemble without delay. Mr,* J. B. Thurston, Colonial Secretary, Fiji, will act as British Commissioner. PRESIDENT CLEVELAND'S MESSAGE. Washington, March 4. President Cleveland delivered his inaugural message to Congress to-day on assuming office. His speech reaffirms the principle of the Monroe doctrine, and urges the avoidance of entangling alliances with other countries. It recommends reform in the Civil Service, and the granting of equality to freedmen, the repression of polygamy, and the exclusion of the Chinese from the United States. VISIT OF THE AMEER TO INDIA. Bombay, March 4. Preparations are being made for an imposing reception of the Ameer of Afghanistan, on his visit to India next month. The formal reception by the Viceroy of the Ameer will take place at Hassan Abdool, in the Punjaub, where twenty thousand troops have been camped for the occasion. The ceremony will be attended with much splendour and eclat. LONDON~MARKETS. London, March 4. Consols have further declined by §, and are now quoted at 971. New Zealand securities are unchanged—viz., 5 per cent. 10-40 loan, 104J; 4J per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 103 ; 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 99-J. The markets for colonial breadstuff's and tallow are quiet, with quotations unchanged. THE ARAWA. London, March 4. Messrs. Shaw, Savil), and Albion Company's Arawa, from New Zealand (Wellington, January 21), arrived at Plymouth last evening. Her cargo of meat is in good condition.
