NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY SENATE.

A taMTisa Of the New Zealand University Senate was held yesterday., Present Chancellor (Dr. Hector), Professor von Haast, Rev. Dr. Roseby, Bishop Cowie, Bishop Redwood, Professor Macgregor, Rev. Dr. Saldibnd, Mr. Fitchett, Rev. D. Brace, Professor F. D. Brown, Professor Shand, Professor Sale, Rer. J. Patterson, and Mr. J. Giles. IS AROHA HOT FPRISGS. A letter was received from Mr. G. Wilson, Chairman Te Aroha Hot Springs Domain Board, inviting the members of the Senate to visit the Hoc springs. Te Aroha. •' MODE OF ELECTION OF FALLOWS. j Dr. Rosebv moved, "1. That the election of Fellows be by open nomination and by ballot. 2. That no person be declared elected unless he receive a majority of the votes of the Fellows present (including proxies) " A discussion ensued on the question, during which it appeared that several members were under tLe impression that the election was to take place next day (Wed* nesday). It was resolved, on the motion of Professor Sale, " That voting be taken in committee of the whole ;" also, on the motion of Professor Brown, "That nominations shall be made m the Senate on any day preceding that which it may have '-en decided to make the election, and that .ae names thus brought before the Senate be the only ones to be considered in the election." The precise mode of election was set forth at length in a motion by Professor Shand. NOMINATIONS OF FfcLLOWS. Professor Sale nominated Professor Cook, and Dr. Redwood nominated Sir James Prendergast. Dr. RodKBT withdrew his nomination of Mr. C. C. Bowen. Sir M. O'Korke being absent, the nomination of Professor Tucker lapsed, but subsequently Professor Macgregor nominated Professor Tucker. • MATRICULATION AND JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP. Rev. Dr. Salmond moved " That the examiners in the Matriculation and Junior Scholarship Examinations be instructed to have their reports in the hands of the Registrar by the 21st of January in each year, and that a Recess Committee be appointed which shall meet during the week following to summarise the results and make them known." Professor Brown moved, as an amendment : "That all the words after ' that' be struck out, with the view of adding, ' the remits of the Matriculation and Junior Scholarship Examinations shall be published not later than the 26th January following the examinations, and that the Recess Committee be appointed to consider the reports of the examiners.' " The amendment was carried. MODERN LANGUAGES. Professor Von Haa»t moved the following clause of the report of the Recess Committee : —" A letter from Mr. E. de Montalk was received, and the committee are of opinion (1) that the question referred to is properly one for the Honours Paper, and suggest that the attention of the examiner in modern languages be drawn to the matter so as to prevent the recurrence of the mistake." The Rev. Dr. Salmond moved, " That the Senate proceed to the next business." The question was one of detail. — Agreed to. Professor Von Haast moved, "That the change suggested with respect to the standard of modern languages in the honours examination is not advisable." Professors Shand and Sale thought this matter should be brought up when the whole question of modern languages was under consideration. The Senate proceeded to the next business. medical COURSE. A letter from Professor Scott relating to the medical coarse was received, and ordered to be referred to a committee. TEACHERS. Professor Von Haast moved the following recommendation in the report of the Recess Committee : —" A letter from the Education Department was received with reference to the admission of teachers to examination, with a view of satisfying the department as to their literary qualification for classes A and B in the same manner as they are now admitted to the equivalent examinations for classes C and D. The committee recommend that the request be complied with, but that the passing of such examinations should not carry any University status, and that a specific announcement thereof be inserted in the calendar."

Professor Macgregor strongly opposed the granting of the concession asked for. Professor Shand also opposed tbe concession, and moved tbe adjournment of the consideration of the clause. Agreed to. HONOURS. Professor Shand moved the adoption of the following clause of the report of the Recess Committee :—" 1. With reference to the petition of Mr. Cronin {lately received), the committee are of opinion that it is not advisable to comply therewith, as such a coarse would have the effect of lowering the standard for honours, and disorganise the existing regulations without any adequate advantage." The petitioner prayed that the clause in the regulations limiting the time for going up for honours be expunged. After some discussion, the resolution was agreed to. THE LATE CHANCELLOR. On the motion of Professor Sale the following resolution, recommended by a committee appointed to consider the subject, was agreed to :—l. "That the Senate record their deep sense of the loss which they have sustained through the death of the late Chancellor, the Hon. Henry John Tancred, their admiration for his high and honourable character, his distinguished ability and his devotion to the cause of education, and also their appreciation of the untiring zeal, the watchful care, and the tact, skill, and courtesy, with which he conducted the affairs of the University as Chancellor during the period of fifteen years from its foundation. That a copy of this resolution with an expression of the deepest sympathy for her personal loss be forwarded to Mrs. Tancred." 2. That the Registrar be instructed to obtain materials for a biographical sketch of the Chancellor, to be deposited among the records of the University." AD EC"SI)EM DEGRESS. On the motion of Professor Sale, seconded by Mr. Fitohktt, Thomas Lloyd, 8.A., Sydney University, was admitted ad eundem to the degree of 8.A., New Zealand University.—On the motion of Professor Sale, seconded by Rev. D. Bruce,, John Murray Moore, M.D., University of Edinburgh, was admitted ad euudem to the degree of M.D., New Zealand University. . -VIOb-Ohan-Cellor's report. The Senate then went into committee to further consider the Vice-Chancellor's report. The Rev,. IX; Bruce, in the absence 'of the Vice-Chancellor, took the chair. The Senate confirmed the action of the Chancellor in the case of a student of the Otago College in allowing him to come up for his B.A. examination, notwithstanding that there was some doubt as to his having kept his terms. NOTICES OF MOTION. The following notices of motion were given :— : Professor Sale : " That in future editions of the calendar in the statute ' of the degree of Bachelor of Arts,' the clauses of paragraphs a, Section 1., subsections (1) and (2) be transposed." Sir G. M. O'Rorke : 1. "Thatthe present system of conducting all the examinations of the University of .\ew Zealand, except that for matriculation and junior scholarships, by examiners in England, is inconvenient, expensive, and beyond the present means of the University." 2. "That, in view of the fact that there are now IS Professors in the affiliated institutions in the colony, and several masters of high academic standing in the secondary schools of the colony, the Senate is of opinion that all University Examinations should be conducted within the colony, instead of, as at present, by examiners in England." 3. "That it be the duty of the Senate to appoint a Board of Examiners annually within - the colony from the Profeasors in the affiliated institutions, and the matters in the secondary schools, and that the examiners so appointed be allowed such reasonable remuneration as the Senate may determine,"
