CRICKET MATCH.

AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. [by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Thursday. This match commenced on the Basin Re* serve this morning. The weather was fine, and a fair wicket was provided. The attendance, however, was very limited. Robinson captained the visitors, and Wilson the looal team. Auckland won the toss and decided to bat. The innings opened rather badly for them, Testro and Mills being dismissed the first over, the former lbw, and the latter playing a ball on to his wicket. Barton and Stafford then got together and before a separation could be effected 42 appeared on the board, of which number Stafford, who was stumped by Nicholls, had contributed 19. Coxon joined the crack bat, and the score rapidly rose to 100 before ths newcomer played a fast one from Holle into the stumps. Lynch had a very short life, being dismissed the second ball. Robinson then joined Barton, and the field were treated to a deal of leather-hunting. All the bowlers were tried, but without effect, and when an adjournment was made for lunch, the two still held the wickets, with a total of 145.

After lunch, both Barton and Robinson were soon at work again, until Lawson dismissed the Auckland captain with a ball which broke back. Ewing followed, and Barton still kept pegging away, but Ewing'a life was not long, he giving an easy chance to Keenan, which was not refused—seven wickets for 167. Osmond was next man, and the score again commenced to rise rapidly, when Lawson gave Barton a similar ball as that which had dismissed Robinson, and with a similar result. Barton played a most careful and patient innings for 83. He only gave one chance, and that a difficult one, otherwise his innings was faultless. Osmond, Meldrum, and MacCormick brought the total to 224, when the last wicket fell, the last-named carrying his bat tor 11. The fielding of the local team was very good, but the bowling was weak, Lawson being the only one who could keep on the spot. The following are the scores :—

The bowling of Auckland was well on the wicket, and runs came slowly. With the score at 14 Keenaa was sent back by Meldrum. Alpe and Cross had only * few minutes, and the first three wickets fell for 25 runs. R. Blacklock and Nicholls, the two young cricketers who made such a good stand against Canterbury last year, now got together, and the Auckland bowling , was knocked all over the field. Boundary hits followed in quick succession, and 100 soon appeared. Robinson tried all his bowlers without the desired effect, and as a last resource went on himself, and after & few overs Blacklock played carelessly at an easy one from Robinson, and paid the penalty. Blacklock played perfect cricket for 51, and this partnership was the means of adding 80 to the score. The next over was fatal to Nicholls, who was given out lbw to Meldrnm. Nicholls' innings of 32 was a good display of cricket. The Wellington wickets now fell fast, and when the stumps were drawn for the day they had lost seven wickets for 124 runs, The following were the scores:— Heenan, b Meldrum .« .« .-,11 Cross, c Ewing, b Mills ... ... ..,6 Alpe, o Lynch, b Meldrum ... ... 0 Blacklock, b Robinson ... , M ... 51 Nicholls, lbw, b Meldrum .„ ... > 32 Wilson, b Robinson ...
