Streets Committee. —This committee recommended as follows :— Petition from residents of Totara-street re forma. Uon : "That the Council be recommended to do the work at an early date." Petition from residents of Franklin-road re removal of earth: " That the earth be removed as applied for in terms of City Engineer s recommendation (cost, about £22)/" Petition from fifty ratepayers re crossing from Hulmes, «neenstreet, to Market entrance : "That reply to effect of Engineer's report be forwarded, viz., that this portion of the road as far down as Wellesley-street is shortly to be picked up and the steam roller put over it Should it afterwards be considered necessary that s crossing bo put the Council be recommended to consider the advisability of s»me." Mr. Crowther moved the adoption of the report.—ln reply to Mr. Laßoche, the Town Clerk said the cost of the work mentioned in petition of residents of Carlton Gore Road and Arawa-street was £2100.—The report was adopted. Kehbikg at Choral Hail.—ln reply to Mr. Aickin, the City Engineer said there was a little difficulty in getting kerbing done at the Choral HalL The material waß ready, but there was a slight twist in the road which delayed the speedy execution of the work. Asphalting Queen-street.— In reply to Mr. Aickin, the City Engineer said that the next' work to be done by the aßphalt contractor was Queen-street, between Vulcan-lane and Victoria-street. Abattoirs. —The Inspector of Abattoirs submitted a proposal for making an extension to the City Abattoirs.—Referred to the Finance Committee.

PATTESON-STB.BET AND COLTJEGE-KOAD. In reply to Mr.' Crowther, the Engineer said it would take two or three week 3 to put in the drains in Patteson-street and Collegeroad. The cost of the Patteson-street sewer would be £1700, and it would necessarily form part of any permanent scheme of drainage.— Mr. Masefield moved "That no action be taken in connection with the -eewer at present."—Mr. Waymouth spoke strongly against the defective drainage in this neighbourhood.—ln answer to Mr. Aickin, the Engineer said in the event of Freeman's Bay being filled in, there would be sufficient fall for the drainage if the sewer was placed on the mud flat.—lt was agreed that the sewer be done at the same time as the other work in Patteson-street. Steam-boi^ee.—Mr. Garratt said there could be no doubt the present staff was insufficient to work the steam-roller.—ln reply to a question the Engineer said it was reported to him several weeks ago that a trap wa3 smashed in Symonds-street during the work of. the steam-roller.—Mr. Garratt said he recently witnessed a narrow escape to a private carriage, in Hobson-street. He moved the suspeneionof the standing orders, in order to move, "That the steam-roller be worked at night."—The motion was put and lost. Lobne-stbeet.— There being no objections, the levels of Lorne-atreet aa advertised were fixed.

Einasce . Committee. — Mr. Kidd was added to the Finance Committee vice Mr. Eattray. Adtjltebatios of Food Act.—A report under this Act stated that thirteen bakers' shop 3 had been inspected since the last report furnished, and the result in all cases was satisfactory. STAKLEr-STREET Seweb .—Mr. Garratt said there were complications in regard to the acceptance of tenders for the Stanley-street sewer, and he was afraid the outcome of it would be a lawsuit. Both Mr. Heath and Mr. Blewden claimed that their tenders had been accepted for the work.—The Mayor said Mr. Heath had no claim in this matter.—lt was pointed out by the Town Clerk that, owing to :an oversight Mr. Blewden was allowed, 14 days under the contract form in which to sign acceptance of the contract instead of three dayd as provided in the specifications. The solicitor to the Council held that Mr. Blewden was entitled to the longer period. Some discussion on the matter having ensued, Mr. Mackechnie pointed out that the discussion was premature as Mr. Heath had made no claim.—lt was ultimately resolved that the bond between Mr. Blewden and the Council be signed, _ Habbotjb Boabd Ofmces.—On the motion •'of the Mayor, it was agreed that it.be an instruction to the Building Surveyor to allow the plana as originally designed for , Harbour Board offices, viz., open balustrading on the face of the building, to be carried out. \

DOMAIN BOABD. ' _ The Council having resolved itself into fche Domain Board, the following report of the Domain Committee wes read :—Letters from S. Maopherson, J. Goldie, and H. Gordon re extension'of lease: "That solicitors opinion, namely, "That the Council have no power,' be reported to the Council, with a recommendation that a reply to that effect lie forwarded to the applicants."
