THE New Zealand Herald. AND DALLY SOUTHERN CROSS. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1884.

The unopposed re-election of Mr. "W. R. Waddel to the responsible position of Mayor -was unquestionably a high compliment to him on the part of his fellow-citizens. No better testimony could be borne by them to the spirit and manner in which he devoted himself to the numerous duties of his office during the past year. It is not saying too much to affirm that no one could have attended to these with more assiduity, care, and judgment than were uniformly manifested by him from the day he entered on their discharge. The interest he took in completing the arrangements for beautifying the Albert Park and the plans he initiated for rendering it a source of attraction and enjoyment to the inhabitants as well 'as to visitors is deserving of the highest praise, and will long cause his name to be associated with this charming place of public resort. In conducting the business of the City Council, in his interviews with all classes of the community on questions of. general or

special concern, he has given ample] evidence of tact and resource which appearanees might not at first have led many to expect; while, in connection with those institutions whose affairs he had in virtue of his office to take part in managing, he was ever ready to undertake a measure of work which his temporary relation to them might have induced him to shun. By such painstaking diligence and the cheerful disposition with which he gave his time and thought to the general well-being of the community, as also by the considerate way in which he performed many charitable and kind acts, he won in a high degree the confidence of the burgesses; and they- have shown their appreciation of his conduct by bestowing on him the highest reward they have it in their power to give, in unanimously entrusting him again with the seals of office. We heartily congratulate Mr. Waddel on bis receiving this mark of public esteem and favour, and hesitate not to express the belief that his future career will justify the ! confidence thus reposed in him. It will not, we feel sure, be considered out of place if, while expressing the satisfaction which Mr. Waddel's re-election as Mayor of Auckland has caused, we at the same time congratulate the burgesses of Parnell on again securing the services of Captain D. H. McKenzie as the chief of their Council. It may with some be a matter of regret that this important suburb is not included within the city, but even these will cordially join with all others in desiring that, so long as it remains a distinct borough, it may be privileged in having as its Mayor a .man of such high character and business capacity as Captain McKenzie has proved himself to be. There, too, the burgesses have shown their good judgment in re-elect-ing tor the office a man who had become well entitled to their confidence.
