COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Hebalo Office. Thursday evening. CUSTOMS duties : Today, £972 3s lOd.

Business during the past week has been somewhat quieter, which may in a measure be nccounted for from the fact that the present week was mail week, and there is little disposition to do business until after the arrival of the English mail due here on Saturday. In dairy produce there is little to note. Butter is still coming forward in good supply, and is unchanged in price, being 8d per lb. wholesale and lOd per lb. retail. Eggs have to Is per doz. wholesale, and Is 3d per doz\ retail. Iq the hay and corn market business has been dull, no sales being reported cf consequence, business being altogether confined to filling immediate requirements. Outs are quoted at 2s lOd to 3s 2d ; fowl wheat from 3s to 3s 3d ; and barley at 3i 2d to 33. Potatoes are still dull of sale, and the market is still overstocked. We quote prices up to £i. In the open markets we hear of lines of good sound potatoes being sold at under £2.

A fair consumptive demand has been experienced in the flour market, although orders have only been to fill present requirement?. We quote local superfine silk dressed at. £12: household, £11; Southern, dull of sale at £9 10s to £10; Southern bran, £5 15s ; sharps, £5 15s.

The gum market continues quiet and depressed, there being almost no buyers, and heavy stocks both of Bast Coast and ordinary qualities are accumulating in town and count iy. The Mountain Laurel and Wntkato are on the berth for London, and the Elinor Vernon for New York. We quote poor ordinary nominally, 30s to 323, unsaleable ; fair ordinary, 34s to 36s ; best ordinary, 37s to 40s ; East Coast, 50s. Messrs. B. Tonka and Co. sold by auction, at their mart, the whole of the cargo of sugars, ex Lapwing, from Brisbane, and fair priceß were obtained. The trade was well represented. 4 trade sale of wines and spiiits was also held. All the lines offered were disposed of at fair prices.
