THE LUNATIC ASYLUM.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—For more than sir years I have visited the Lunatic Asylum every week. During this time I have never seen any signs of unkind' treatment shown towards the patients by the attendants, bat, on the contrary, have always oonoidered that they were well ■ treated. Besides conducting the aervice, I have gone over the Asylum at different hours during the day, and patients have spoken to me and given me letters, and I *ay that I firmly believe that the patients aro well taken care of and kindly treated by the attendants, who, in my opinion, are cer« tainly not. men of a "low grade." Soma of the warders have been at the Asylum fer many years, and I consider them to be kind, humane, and upright men, to whose care I should have no fear of entrusting anyone mentally afflicted. The management is also, in my opinion, too dareful, striot, and skilful to allow of a patient being ill-treated without immediately finding it out. As my connection with the institution is entirely honorary and unofficial, I hope that this testimony-will tend, in some degree at least, to set at rest the anxious fears of thoie who at present have friends under treatment in the Asylum.—l am, 40., John Haseldhk-. t St. Luke's Parsonage, Mount Albert*
