BOARD OF EDUCATION.

.Tee ordinary meeting of the Board of Ec!n« catioa was held jesterday. Present: Meain. Lake (in the chair), Carr, Goldie, Cooped and Profe«sor Tucker.

: -Chairman's Repobt.—The usual weekly report of the Chairman as to temporaryarrangements was submitted as follows :— Hits Jane Wallis, pupil teacher, removed' from Newton East to Mount Eden. Three -_ essays had been received from Faparoa and' forwarded on to Secretary of Society for the ■ Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Whangaponn Committee had been atked for ' an explanation re school fund account. . Mr, A. J. Litten had been granted pet* mission to act as Deputy Returning Officer at Connty Council election in Henderson Mill school building. Monday, 10th instant, hud been advertised as the annual holiday for the town -and suburban schools in commemoration of the birthday of H.B.H. the Prince. of Wales. The Tararu committee .bad been famished with report as to teach*; ing of singißg by Mr. Blomneld.—The report was adopted. .' : BccKLAND.—Correspondence was read rerequest of householders in this district asking - for a school ia Buckland West. Mr. Gregory, one of the householder!, waited on the Board as a deputation to'urge the reconsideration of this matter by the Board. The resolutions came to previously showed that the application had betn several times ' declined.—lα response to the invitation o£ the Chairman, Mr. Gregory made an explanation of the question to the Board. A meeting of the settlers had been held oa October 24 to decide as to the site. There were two parties amongst them, and they -could not agree upon the aite, so the meeting had , -resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Board as to where the school ' was to be bnilt Mr. Gregory himself would like the ichool near the raUway-atation. Bin own children were unable to atte&d tha Pukekohe school, a* it was 3J miles distant. His neighbour had a family at 14, and they were unable to attend,—Professor Tucker was of opioion that a list of all children in the district should be compiled for the infer- • mation of the Board, showing their age and distance from nearest school.—Mr. Goldie thought that if the school was granted, it would immediately " stave out" the Harrisville teacher. —The Chairman moved, " That;; information as to nnmber of children, age, and distance from school, in the vicinity of the proposed school, and the Board would; take the same into consideration." Considerable desultory discussion ensued, and the motiV/n was agreed to. Mr. Gregory thanked' the Board for their courtesy, and withdrew. ' :

■ Ararimc.—The application to have the school lined was allowed to stand over.

' ' Babylon.—A communication was read asking for a school in this district, which is situated in the vicinity of Helensville. There are nine European- children, and twenty-two native children of a school-going age. The .letter was referred to the education depart" meat.

Mount HessoN.—The request for addi« tional closet accommodation to this school was referred to the Board's engineer. —The committee aiked that tha school might be enlarged. Deferred' until the Board is in funds. Whaberoa. —The committee requested that a school-house aad teacher's residence might be .built, as at present a ball waa rented for teaching, purposes, and thare was no house for the teacher.—Matter deferred until the Board ie in funds. Kihikihi.—The appointment of a teacher to this school was deferred. CpaoMANDEL. — Mr. Edwards was ap»! pointed head teaoker to this school, to com« mence from January 1. : . Miscellaneous. —Correspondence relating to teachers was read ; applications for employment were dealt with, and other matters of detail were considered. Accounts.—The ordinary accounts wem submitted and pasted for payment.
