BIRKENHEAD AND NORTHCOTE.
At the meeting of the Waitemata County Council yesterday, the Chairman said the time had expired within which these' districts should settle their differences.—That being so, the Council had the authority of the Act to intervene. Mr. Randerson said, the books were in a muddle. He could say nothing: as to the genuineness of the liabilities. —Rev. Mr. McCallum said ,he was ready to present a balance-sheet.—Mr. Thompson agreed with Mr Randerson.—The. Chairman said the. ; workmen should be paid.—Mr. McCallum Baid that - the items had been paid except two.—The Chairman said the old Board was still in existence, and the new Boards should meet and agree as to what was to be done.— Mr. McCallum asked the Council to settle the matter.—Mr. __Randerson wished the matter to be determined according to law.— The Chairman said the workmen were the sufferers. He did everything to effect an amicable settlement. But, in the face of every effort, voluminous opinions were offered of the operation of law. It was not law that was wanted, but an amicable settle-ment.-—lt was agreed that the Chairman and Messrs. Duder and Cantwell should hold ani inquiry into all matters in difference, on Wednesday, at two o'olocls. Messrs. Thompson and Randerson waited on the Board- from Birkenhead, to make enqAirjM as'to how the special grant had beea~ expended in Takapuna Road-' Board/ —Thu Chairman said that rione was expended on district roads in; the Takapuna riding;. , The County Council'had resolved to spend money granted by' Govetnnient only on "county roads." It was'necessary to proalaim some road a" county' McCallum isaid' ,that "it'.would be a jgreat benefit' if the ioad 'from Stokes" Point." to Lucas' Creek were made a main road'.—Tile Chairman rfaid the Council' w6uld;iry again. —Mr. Randerson would on the proper occasion, ask that the road from Birkenhead Wharf to Lucas' Creek be deolared a county road.
