The Board of Education had, as usual, • several troublesome and awkward questions before it yesterday. A lady teacher in the employment of the Board asked, for a month's leave of absence and a month's salary, but Mr. Goldie objected to the public funds being devoted to the expenses of a confinement. We agree with Mr. Goldie,- and are surprised to hear from Mr. Luke that it has been the custom to grant salary for the periods of these necessary retirements from active service. Such acts are,' indeed, those of a '' paternal" Government, desirous of favouring an increase of population, but the fact that'the education vote is exhausted must also be kept steadily in vievr. The Board then, commenced the usual discussion, in the cases of Mr. CDonoghae and Mr. Talbot. Oaa teacher at the Thames is, 'it seems, in receipt of an allowance for rent and other exceptional favours, and that has natu- . rally caused grumbling on the part of others. The Board are in a difficulty about Mr. Talbot. The Grafton-road Committee say that he must be removed, and there was some jocularity at the Board about putting >irm in & place full of bigotted adversaries to him as an.. Orangeman." Knally, it was agreed to remove Mr. Talbot from Grafton-road. It was decided to discontinue the services of Mr. Brabazon at Nelson-street, and to give him six months' salary. Some discussion took place regarding a letter from Mr. McArthur. asking that the Board should reconsider its decision, and ultimately the- matter -was deferred. The report of the proceedings will found interesting reading.
