A YORKSHIRE MYSTERY.
A singular affair has occurred at Cayton, a >village, a few miles from Scarborough. A young woman named Stephenson, daughter of a farmer, recently gave birth to a child, which died a few days afterwards. The coroner ordered an inquest to bo held. A. jury , was summonsed and sworn but it transpired that the body had been taken away, and the jury hadtobedischarged. It is; believed that the, body had been cremated, and a quantity of ashes collected by the police supports this theory. Miss .Stephenson, who is only seventeen, and her mother were arrested, and charged on suspicion of murdering the child. The elder prisoner asked permission of the police to go upstairs,-and she there attempted to commit suioido by hanging herself. She was cut down just,in time to savo her life. The prisoners were brought before the magistrate acd remanded, . ■.
