In future Professor Shand's lectures on heat, electricity, and magnetism will alternate with lectures on heat, sound, light, and so cover the whole ground of Experimental Physics. It ia with very g'reat satisfaction that I report the appointment of four • additional lecturers to the Medical Sahool. When the lecturer on medical jurisprudence and public health has been chosen, the staff of the Medical School will be complete. It gives mp great pleasure to be able to state that Dr. Colquhoun, of London, has arrived in the nick of time, and - at this moment occupies a seat upon the platform. The Mining School has some gaps in its staff, but its affairs will receive the special consideration of the Council. It will interest you'to learn that the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland, at their meeting in January, resolved to institute a third chair in the University, and at the same time appointed ail influential committee of members to confer with our Council on the subject to be assigned - to - it. The exieting • staff now includes eight professors and eight lecturer?, and when the proposed chair is elected, and the lecturers in prospect appointed, it' will number about twenty. From euch a band of workers in the field of higher education, onr people have a right to expect results of untold good. -
