ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council wu held on Monday evening, to receive objections to the burgess list. In the absenee of the Mayor (Dr. Scott), Mr. Hastie was elected Chairman. Several names were added to the • ist, and the roll, containing 350 names, was ordered to be certified to. After the special meeting an adjourned meeting of the Council was held, to finish off the business left undisposed of ak the last meeting. Railway Alteration.—A tracing of the proposed alterations at the terminus was laid on the table.—These plans did not meet with approval. The public convenience appears in no way consulted, the access for passengers being by a round about way. The crossing in Queen-street involves two bridges, presumably of wood, and Princesstreet, an important thoroughfare, is reduced to a width of 40 feet. Pbivatb Stbekts.—The Council having granted permission to lay off a private street on the Green Hill, subject to a condition that a clause in the Act, with reference to damages that might be caused at some future time, when the levels were fixed, should in some way be declared inoperative, the solicitors, Mesera. Laishleyand Jackson, now wrote advising that this could not be done. It wae, however, pointed out that the privilege applied for was in reality not a " private street," as denned in the Amendment Act, 187S, but only a "right-of-way," 40 feet wide.—The question was referred back for an opinion on this point, and further, whether the owner of any right-of-way could call upon the Courcil for levels at any time. What appears to be a singular anomaly the Act was pointed out by Mr. Hastie. namely, that owners on a public street bad no power to call upon the Council to fix levels, or take the consequences, but the owners oaa " private street" could do so.— LOwn Correspondent, April 29.]
