GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

A meeting of the Grammar School Board of Education was held yesterday. Present : Sir George Maurice O'Rorke, Rev. Mr. Nelson, Mr. W. R. Waddel (Mayor), Mr. J. M. Clark, Mr. Mackechnie, Mr. Tole, and Mr. Hobbt. N»w Mkmbkus.—Sir Maurice O'Rorke announced that since the last meeting the Kev. Mr. Nelson had been re-elected by the Senate ; U«Hn. Hobba and Clark by the iiuard of Education, and Judge Fenton by the Auckland members ot the Legislature. Chairmanship. — Sir George Maurice O'Rorke announced that his term of otliue as Chairman hai expired, and it was now the duty of the Board to appoint a Chairman. Mr. Clark moved that Sir George Maurice O Rorke be re-elected Chairman. Sir Maurice O'Rorke had always discharged the dutiestothesatisfactionoftheßoard, and took a pleasure in the work.—Th« Rev. Mr. Neleon etconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. — Sir Maurice O'Rorke in taking the chair thanked the Board for the compliment it had paid him in re-electing him to the Chairmanship. He bad contemplated retiring from the office owing t> hie absence for three months each year in Wellington. He had also entartained an idea that such an office as Chairman should rotate tmongit the member* of the Board generally, or amongst those willing to serve. He had always received the greatest courte»y from all the members of the Board, and had presided with pleasure at the meetings of ihe Board. AKCHii'ijcr.—A letter was received from Mr. Mosj introducing Mr. D. Ross, architect. Ordered that the letter be received, and that Mr. Mow be thanked for the information supplied in his letter. l>caKA« rr Sahby.— On the motion of the Chairman, the salary of Mr. Francis, master of the Ponsonby branch, was increased from £200 to £230 a year. The motion was agreed to num. con. Incrbaubo Accommodation.—The question of granting increased accommodatiou for •cholare waa brought up on a letter from the bead-master, and report of a committee. At the last meeting of the Board, a letter was read from the head-maater pointing out that the school waa filled, and asking if he should, after the holidays, refuse the admission of scholars beyond a total of 300, pending increased accommodation being provided. The plans for an addition to the building were submitted to the Board. Estimates of cist of the proposed additions were £4300, £4800, and £5800. It was stated tbat the money annually at the dispoial of the Board over and above the present expenditure was 1350. It was the general opinion of the Board that the proposed expenditure was too great for the funds at the disposal of the Board.—Mr. Mackechnie opposed any additions to the building, as he was of opinion the Board had reached the limit of scholars which the Board could take with advantage. —Th« advisability of increasing the fees was suggested. —It was agreed, alter some discussion, that tbe further consideration of the matter be deferred t>ll next meeting, and that in th<! meantime the Chairman and Mr. Tole should confer with the architect, with the view oi obtaining plans of additions, not t> cost more than £1500. The following was the concluding portion of Mr. Bourne's suggestion:—"! would suggest that (1) 1 should be empowered to refuse admissions to the lower form beyond the number of 10 ; (2) that should the applications exceed this number, the 10 to be admitted should be selected upon the result of the entrance examination, account being taken of ge, and s> preference given to the four whose naeaes I have already received if found fit; (3) that applications made after the preper day should not be entertained, except in very special cases ; and (4) that th« lioaitatio should be mentioned in <Vj» advertisement. — C. P. Bod-knk, headmaster."—This recommendation was adopted.
