LOCAL GOVERNMENT AID.
TO THB EDITOR. Sir, —The Premier has on more than on* occasion told his hearers that his Government has done more to foster and extend the principles of local self-government than any other F,, r a small example of how this is done I would cite an instance. Lioemes for slaughter-houses for three suburban localities are applied for to the various local authorities, and a price is fixed upon for the license, at such a figure as will aid to make and repair the roads damaged by the traffic thereto, and also to enforce that supervision so necessary to ensure that the inspection of meat sent into the town and suburbs is not quite a farce. The applicants being dissatisfied with the proposed charge, take legal advice thereon, and at a few hours' notice a Court of Magistrates is convened, and licenses at ceo© granted at a nominal sem (which amount, it is stated, goes to Wellington), so that under this system at fostering (?) the local governing bodies, the control of such places u taken eut of their haads ; they get none of the fees to help them iu their road work, and the control or supervision so essential ia taken from them, and a nominal one, if any, only take* place. This is one sample of how the Government foster and aid the local autherities.—l am, tc , M.
