[by telegraph.—press association.] Christchurch, Monday. Hon. H. J. Tancred, who camo to Canterbury in 1851, died yesterday, aged 68. The deceased gentleman was three times a member o£ the New Zealand Government: First nnder Mr. Sewell. next under Mr. Stafford, and lastly under Mr. Domett. He was Speaker of the Provincial Council from 1880 until the abolition of provinces in 1875. In 1871 he become the first Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, and held that position till his death. He was highly respected by all who knew him. At the Supreme Court this morning, on His Honor Justice Johnston taking his seat, he made the following address :—"Gentlemen of the special jury,—Before we proceed to the business of the day I cannot refrain from alluding to the great loss which' the colony, and this portion of it especially, has just sustained by the decease of a gentleman who in former times frequently assisted in the administration of justice in this place as grand and special juryman, as a member both in the Colonial and Provincial Legislatures, as a Minister and Chancellor of the University, and in various other positions of honour and responsibility. Mr. Tancred devoted a great portion of his life to the services of the community. He leaves behind him an unspotted reputation as a private gentleman and as a servant of the public, and he will be recognised by all his fellow colonists an one of those men of education and honour among the early settlers who. have helped to procure for the colony the good name which I believa.it bears in the world, and which I sincerely hope it never will forfeit."

At the Canterbury , College Board of Governors meeting a resolution was unanimously passed, on the motion of the Primate, seconded by Mr. Malet, expressive of regret at the loss sustained by the College.
