CRICKET.—AUCKLAND V. EXCELSIOR. " A match was played between Auckland and Excelsior on tbe Domain on Saturday. The latter, who batted first, had fifteen to their opponent's eleven, and were all disposed of for 48. The principal contributor was G. Brown, with nine runs. Beale bowled splendidly, and secured nine wickets at a small coat. Auckland made the required runs -with three wickets down. H. liusk batted well for his runs, while O'Brien was not out, yith 23 to his credit, when time was called. O. !?. Reid, who was also not ont, got one off the ground to square-leg for six. The first match of the season was played on the Recreation Ground, North Shore, on Saturday atternoon, between representative teams of the Ironmongers and Warehouses. After a well-contested matcb, the ironmonger* came off victors- by 2 goals and 3 tries (16 points) to nothing. Moginie played in fine ptyla for the winners, and placed no leas than three tries to their credit. Cranoh and Stewart sdso obtained, a try each. Hobson converted.two'of the tries into unmistakable goals.' A number of spectators crossed over the water to the marine suburb to witness the match, and the respective teams returned to town by;,the five o'clock steamer after a good match, in which the Ironmongers thoroughly showed their superiority in Rugby. The teams were captained by' Messrs. Moginie and Davy respectively. For the Hardware, Moginie, Colbourne, Keep, Stewart, ilobaon, Crouch, and Moantford played well, whilst Chapman, Binnie, Skeen, Davy, and Talbot for the Soft Goods are deserving of special mention. The Ponsonby Club were to have a practice match in ttie Domain on Saturday, but a sufficient number of members not turning up, sides were picked amongit those on tho ground, and a'good game was played by those who did put in an appearance. There will be a meeting of the Association at the United Service .Hotel to-nigbt, when the Auckland contingent, for New Zealand representative team for tbe Sydney tour will be picked; Five players h»v« to b<? selected, and from appearances it would aeem as if they are going to be selected on account of form displayed last season.
