BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the Board -of Education was held yesterday. . Present: —Mr. R. Hobbs (Chairman), Messrs. Luke, Moat, Cooper, Carr, Moss, Goldie, and Clark. -, Overdraft. — The Secretary (Mr. V. E. Rice) read the following letters between the Board and the manager of the Bank of Now Zealand on the question of overdraft.—

Board of Education, Auckland, 21st April, 1884.— Sir,—l am directed to acknowledge the receipt of letter dated Bth April instant, in which you state that the bank cannot accede to the Board's request for a twelve months' overdraft of £6000 for school buildings " until an appropriation is made by the Government to meet such advance." By- direction of the Board I have the honour to enclose copy of a telegram reoeived from the Hon. Major Atkinson, Premier and Colonial Treasurer, on the subject of .provision for school buildings, and I have to ask the bank to be good enough to alio* an overdraft of about thiee thousand pounds (£3000) so as to enable the Board to m*<t the liabilities already contrac ed lor (as explained in my previous lotter) no til the meeting of Parliament.— I am. &c, Vinosst IS. The Secretary Board Education : Sir, —I have tee honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 21it instant, enclosing copy of a telegram received by you from the Hon. Major Atkinson, and applyine for an overdraft of about £8000 to enable your Board to meet liabilities already contracted on building account.' lam directed to inform you in reply that the bank will advance as required the sum of £8401 10s lOd (three thousand four hundred and one pounds ten shillings and ten pence),.being the amount stated in your letter of 3rd April, as that needed, on the distinct understanding.that such advance with Interest will be paid out of the first money available for building purposes, and th.t no further commitments in that direction are undertaken by the Board till money is available, it being also clearly understood that the liability to the,bank will not be allowed toexoeed the amount named.— I have, &c„ G. : The Chairman thought that members of the Board should take advantage of the opportunity when is ooourred to protest against oharges of extravagance against the Board. Neither the Board nor committees were paid, and tbe Board could surely not be open to accusations of extravagance .when only.the necessary school wants were supplied ; moreover, the buildings here were constructed ,of wood, while ■ those" .in Canterbury were.of brick and stone.. — Mr. ,Luke" concurred, largely with the Chairman's views on this point.—On the motion of the Chairman, the following resolution . was passed :—." That the Board has no funds available for building purposes, that" tbe provision bnade by Parliament for school buildings last'year was quite inadequate ; that the Board has. strongly urged on Government the-necessity of provision being made for buildings • and that, until such provision iB made, the Board is absolutely not able to incur any farther liabilities." Chairman's Report.—The Chairman reported that a letter had been Bent to the Minister of Education with a detailed list of the Board's immediate requirements for school - buildings, amounting to £24,442 10s lOd. The Meroury Bay Committee had been authorised to sell the school boat, and apply proceeds to. sohool fund. Ababimot.— A request was reoeived for the establishment of a new school distriot, to be called the Ararimu "Valley District. —After some discussion, the matter was referred to. the committee for report., Mb. .Talbot.—A report was received from Mr.. Healy,' head teacher, Grafton-road,- re Mr.,,Talbot.. It was'of no public interest; being a long, wordy letter oh small points of school discipline,", etc. Mr.-Talbot also sent a letter,. vindicating himself'against certain charges made against him. —'Mr. Luke moved, "That the'recommendation of the committee be approved, and that Mr. Talbot be removed."—The Chairman said;it was. quite time the Board put a stop to the wrangling and quarrelling in this case.— Th'e'motion was carried. " , Auckland City.—The committee wrote asking if the head-master's report of the Nelson-street Sohool wsb satisfactory ? —Mr. Carr said there had been dissatisi'aotion with the head-master of this school for some years past.—Referred to the Inspeotor for report. KiHiKtHi.—A letter was reoeived from W. A. Cowan, stating that he had already formulated oharges against Mr. Nicholson, and forwarded them to the Board. —Letter received. Applications be School Botmdings.— A number of applications for funds were received, and it was agreed to inform the committees that the Board had no funds for school-building purposes at present. Nkwton.—lt was!resolved to appoint an assistant male teacher to this school. Onehonoa.—Application for grant in aid of sohool library. £4 had" been raised by an entertainment. — An equal amount was granted by the Board. Pakoranga. — Mr. Saunders wrote charging Mr. Worsley, assistant teacher, with oruolly beating his son. Some correspondence on the subjeot was received from the committee and read.—Agreed to enquire as to the language used by the boy Saunders. Papakora- Valley. — Agreed that five acres be acquired for school site. Unsucoessfcl Schools.—On the motion of Mr. Clark, seconded by Mr. Goldie, it was resolved that the Inspector furnish a list of those schools whioh had shown bad results at the examinations, and to suggest what action, if any, should be taken. Taurano*. — Application for grant in aid of school library.—Deferred for information.

Te Akoha.—The committee wrote complaining of the fact that the Te Aroha West sohool had been made half-time. Waitancu and West Maokait.—Agreed to appoint male teacher to these sohoole, and that at Brookside a female teaoher be appointed. ...'.-.. Wamcwokth.—Re charge of drunkenness against the teacher, Mr. Campbell. The committee recommended that Mr. Campbell be given another trial.—After some discussion the recommendation was approved. Thames.—Mr. O'Donoghue renewed his application for permission to train his pupil teachers.. He again urged reasons for this change, and stated that the pretent training master did not correct the papers of pupil teaohera.—Resolved that the training teaoher should have an opportunity to reply. . Expenses.—lt was resolved to pay amount of Mr. ..Robinson's (drawing master) expenses from Wellington, £26. Visitibo MABTBB.~Mr. Tut«ohka applied to be allowed to visit the Girls' High School. —Granted.
