WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[TBOJC OTJB OWN CORRESPONDENTS.]

Hamilton, Friday. Tkb Waikato cheese factories will_ all be considerable exporters of cheese during the next few months, and many tons will _be , shipped to the English market. Now, whilst the freight from Auckland to London is not more than Id per lb., from here to Auckland by railway it is 45s 4d per ton, packed in cases, or say id per lb. This is utterly disproportionate, and there is a strong feeling herein Waikato that in the interests of a young and important industry, a rebate at least half the railway freight should be made. Information was reoeived yesterday afternoon by private telegram, that in the taxation of costs case heard tbat day in Anckland, judgment had virtually gone against the borough, since if less than a sixth is taxed off a solicitor's bill of costs, the/ whole expense of the action falls upon the applicant for taxation. ' Although' these costs will amount to something like £30 altogether, there was, nevertheless, a feeling of satisfaction expressed that an end would be brought to the systematic overriding by the borough executive of the expressed wishes of the Council, that body having twice expressly resolved that proceedings should be_ discontinued in the taxing of Mr. Hay's bill of coats. ,'- : "

Mr. T; Gi Sandeswas very "successful at the settlements'ofßombay and : Waiuku in furthering the'* co-operation movement.- Of fifty-one persons present at the: Bombay meeting, 37 Bubsonbed for Bbares on the spot, and at Waiuku a storekeeper who attended with the object of controverting the efforts of the lecturer, wound up by subscribing for 20- shares, and accepting the local agency of the association. It is intended to stwt a large retail store in Auckland for the Bale of settlers' produce of all kinds, inducting meat, dairy produoe, fruit, eto. Amongst other advantages to the settlers will be the procuring of cheap manures. It has. been ascertained that guaranteed genuine bone dust can be procured iu Australia at £4 2s 6d per ton, and carried in chartered vessels for 20s per ton to New Zealand. Cambridge, Friday. The bazaar in aid of the building fund of the Roman Catholic Presbytery will be opened on Tuesday next. A large quantity of valuable and choice goods have been contributed.,by:th« ladies and others of Cambridge, Auckland," and other places, and these will, be "marked, at prices giving fair value to those, who' patronise the stalls, the initiation of a he'jv- but profitable feature in bazaars. Nb',,'d6'ubt' there'..will be a large attendance on the, evenings of the race days, and those who* have', spared ;nd "efforts in making this" bazaar a 'pleasurable attraction at holiday time will well" deserve the support of the p'ublao.pf all classes and denominations. ..•'•-_".".•".'.' ..... Mr. J. 87-Whyte, the. member for Waikafco, telegraphed'yesterday to the Railway Department asking that a special train might be put on from Auckland to the races here on Wednesday and Thursday next. Considering that nearly 900 people travelled by rail to the Te Awamutu races on a recent occasion, it may reasonably be supposed that a special train to so important a meeting as that to be held at Cambridge next week will induce a large accession of visitors to Waikato on that occasion. [BT TIILEGKAPH.—OWN OOHRJJSFONDKNT.] Hamilton, Friday evening. At a meeting of the Waikato County Council to-day, the only'business of interest was a resolution agreeing to join with Waipa county in paying half the maintenance of the Hamilton traffic, the borough paying the other. half. A letter -from the Tamahere Farmers' Club, asking he county to cooperate in some other plan of keeping down the small bird nuisance other than by poisoning, was met by the statement that if some plan for the purchase of sparrows' eggs and heads at so much per dozen could be arranged, the county would strike a speoial rate to defray the expenses. ~ ■ The ; certificate-of- incorporation of. the Farmers', Cooperative Association was issued to-day...< :NA,';:r.: »■ v. ■.-. ■- • y I ...
