- Hek - Speech Restobkd.—Clair View, Inverell, 10th December, 1883. Mesirs. :M. Leryand , Co.: Dear Sirs, —I beg to acquaint you of a marrellous cure following on the use of St. Jacob's Oil, which has taken place in my own family. lam a poor man with eight children, and for jears have been a great sufferer from sciatica. My wife was advised.-to try St. Jacob's Oil. She procured a bottle, and I hare been using it of late with good results: but it is of my eldest daughter, 13 years of age, that I wish to tell you. She retired one night about four months ago in her usual good health, but the next morning she could not speak. Sly wife'took her to Inverell to seeDrr——, who said her throat was ulcerated low down, and he prescribed cod liver oil and other medicines ; and also advised her to inhale the fumes of Stockholm tar, saying she might nerer recover her speech again. At the expiration of a fortnight, the medicine having been finished, another visit to the doctor was made, e who again prescribed for her, but told my wife he had no hope of her ever being able to speak again. Wβ began to despair, but the day I uaed the oil—about three months after she wag , taken 111—I persuaded my wife, afier we had retired, to use the oil. She got up' and gave the girl two drops in water, and rubbed it ou her throat. Next morning we were delighted to find that'she could talk as well as ever, and has been atle to do so ever since.—l remain,- gentlemen, gratefully yours, Jas. K. Hatcher. .:.■:■■>

What is gas coke ? Gas coke is nearly all carbon, and carbon properly burned will give out. In round numbors. 14.000 units of heat per pound, or very nearly as much as the best English ste»-.m coals. Indeed, coal only surpasses it because of the small quantity of hydrogen which it contains uncombised with oxygen. Itis of ten urged tflat coke canaot be as eood as coal Decause it has lost all the heat-producing power eouiralent to that of the gas driven 0ff. ... It ii quite true that the coke resulting from one ton ot coal does not possess the same calorific value as the coal from which it was made. But it must be borne in mind that we are comparing coke with coal weight fob weight. Thus, lOOlbs. of coal produces 661bs. of coke: so that some SOcwt. of coal i< required to produce one ton of coke, and the difference satisfactorily, allows to* the heat producing power of the gas driven off. ■ •
