SLAUGHTER HOUSES—LICENSING MEETlNG.—Wednesday.
(Before Messrs. H. G. Seth Smith, "R. AT. (diatrmaii) and F. L. Prime, and F. Q. Clayton, Jnjticej. ' A meeting of the Benoh, appointed onder the Slaughter Houses Act, 1877, to hear applications for licenses, was held at ten o'clock a.m. Hellaby Bbothers. — Application for renewal. 'Mr. Theo. Cooper for the applicants ; Mr. Thoa. Cotter for the iCity Council, in opposition. The application was opposed on three grounds ; (1) that the Bench- had no jurisdiction ; (2) that.'the slaughter houses were within half a mile of the borough; (3) that the old slaughter bouse having been burnt down, this waa really a new application. An interesting argument on all the points, involving an examination of the Counties' Acta, the Municipal Corporation Acts, and the Slaughter Houses Acts, ensued between Mr.. Cooper and Mr. Cotter. Eventually the Bench decided in favour of Mr. Cooper's, contentions, and held that their jurisdiction had been preserved by Section 14 of the Counties Act, ISB2, that the boundaries of the city must be held to be those existing when the Act of 1877 was passed •. (the slaughter house then being more than half a. mile outside the then boundary), and that as the fire had only partially destroyed the ' buildings, the reinstatement did not affect the question, as the slaughter house - was substantially the same. The application . was granted. Gkokge Hulme.—Application for .renewal. Mr. Tole appeared in support. Application granted. Fisher and Co.—Mr. Tole appeared for the applicants. Application for renewal granted.
