TE AROHA, Wednesday. A utixe child, two years of age, the son of a man named Young, a miner living at Waiorongomai, died yesterday under somewhat peculiar circumstances. It was thought to hare been poisoned by eating tutu berries. At the inquest, which was held thU morning before Mr.' H-; Kenrick,. the Coroner, a verdict was passed that the child died from congestion of the lungs. .

A man named J. Be Camps was found dead in the clearing shed of the railway premises at Makatoku early this morning.

At a meeting of the.Wellington Trade and Labour Council to-night it was decided to co-operate with and follow the. political programme adopted by similar Councils at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin. -

At a special meeting of the Hospital Board it was resolved to urge the Government to connect the Hospital to the Chriatchurch sewers as recommended by Mr. AuetiE.

At the Standard Brewery this'afternoon Mr. Finnea and one of the workmen were severely scalded through a tap in the boiler' bursting. Mr. T. C. Moorhouse offers hie services te the electors of the Avon district (Mr. Rolleston's). The following will represent the challengers, subject to alteration :—Captain Richards, Lieutenant Webb, Sergeant Robinson, Corporal Aclande, Cadets Cbitholm, El Perry, E. D. Studholme, Williamson, Worthy, H. Stacks. Emergencies : Sergeant Harper, Cadets F. Perry, J. Wright, H. Weston, and Blakiston.

The.Southern Cross directors report that the pipes ordered from America have arrived per the Tongariro, and will be forwarded to the works at the earliest opportunity. No. 2 bore will now be poshed forward, and no further delay is anticipated. Next month a call of sixpence will be necessary, but it is' not expected that future calls of any large amonnt will be required. The directors feel that it will be completed at an early date. -

At a meeting of the South Pacific shareholders to-night, at which about 7000 shares were represented it was resolved to send power o£ attorney to Sydney in order to transfer the directorate from Sydney to Christcburch. The following were nominated direotors :—Messrs. W. Wilson, Matley, Fisher, Davis, MpDougal, Donbrain, and Banning. The direotors were empowered to send delegates to Sydney if necessary. The requisition to the Hon. E. Richardson to become a candidate for Kaiapoi seat has been signed by 350 of the leading settlers in the district.

DUNEDIN, Wednesday. At the annual meeting of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, it was agreed a £50 cup should be given at the next show for the largest prizetaker in horse, cattle, and sheep classes, and one of £25 in cheese and batter. A vote of thanks was passed to the Hon. Mr. Kolleston for securing the new show ground in the Ocean Beach Sandhills, upon whioh it is expected the next year's show will be held. Mr. T. Brydon was elected President, and Mr. Gray Russell "Vice-President. ,

At a well-attended meeting to-day, it was decided to form an Early History Society for Otago and Southland only. A motion to call it the New Zealand Historical Society was lost.

Mr. Thos. Bracken, M.H.B. for Tjunedin Central addressed a meeting of his constituents last night. The hall was crowded. The Mayor wee in the chair. Mr. Bracken dealt principally with decentralisation, strongly favouring Mr. Macandrew and Mr. Montgomery's platform. He was accorded an unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.

The Mosgiol Woolen Company have declared an interim divideud at the rate of ten per sent. The Takapuna inquiry will take place to-morrow.

A young man named Prescott, -in the employ of Kennie and Dorawell, butchers, committed suicide by hanging himself da a water-closet early this morning. Monetary difficulties ate supposed to be the cause. He was only recently, married. The annual financial statement of the Eaitangata Belief Fund Committee shows that the amount on hand and invested to the credit of the fund is £13,050. During the year ending February 29th last £1255 were paid in cash to widows and children of deceased miners, and £298 advanced to recipients for various purposes.
