THE NORTH ISLAND TRUNK RAILWAY.

' ■ ♦ : Thb Hon. Mr. Mitoheleon had deaieaed to proceed to Waikato to-day to go throngh one of the 'Western lines of the proposed North-Island Trunk Railway, but has had to postpone his departure till Sunday next. He found that the surveyors had come in te New Plymouth, and therefore he will have to wait for the arrival of the steamer on. Sunday. That vessel will bring Mr. Holmes, one. oE the survey staff, and Mr. Mitchelsnn will leave with him by special train for Te Awamutu. On Monday morning they will start from Kihikihi, and will proceed along the line. For about fifty miles the line is the same as that by which Mr. Mitchelson hae come up to Auckland, and then it diverges, going throngh the bash, to Stratford. When Mr. llitchelson has completed the examination of that line, he will come back to Auckland by the extreme western line by the Mokau River. That done, the Minister for Public Works will have personally inspected all the practicable routes for the trunk railway, and will be able to give an opinion of great value as to which is the best. We should be inclined to place every reliance on his decision. When he returns to Auckland again he will have actually travelled over all the routes, which no- other man has yet done. His opinion will no doubt be decisive so far as the Ministry are concerned. From the strenuous exertions being made to complete the information respecting the railway routes, it would appear that the Ministry have decided next seseion to ask the House to give their authority to raise the loan and to proceed with the construction of the North Island Main Trunk Railway.
