The only points worthy of notice in the address' of Major Harris, to his constituents last night" are his determination to uphold tho Education Act as it is, and his intention to support the Ministry in thei
enforcement of; the nenr tariff. Tjjy declaration of Bomething like fixity o f opinion'on two. enbjecte ? of "each" import ance is not. without its -value as coming from the bon. member for, Franklin North* It- is a peculiarity of the hon. member that he commonly abstains from c mitting himself, to any. measures In particular, and holds himself free to act on all questions-pretty much as circtua. stances may direct.- He therefore deserves credit for departing from his usual coarse on this occasion, and attaching himself definitely to the advocacy of matters bo materially affecting the -whole colony ag tnat of the education of its youth and the working of its railways. It was hardly to be expected that he would trouble himself with the consideration o'f the financial difficulties with which our educational system is becoming surrounded, or the adjustments to which it may yet be necessary to. subject our railway tariff. Detail like these nre not much in his way, he therefore acts prudently in leaving the investigation and settlement of them to persons competent to-deal with them. No one member can have a faculty f or everything, and it is well -when everyone has sense enough to keep within his beat. Judging from the vote of thanks inj confidence accorded to him, it may ba inferred that Major Harris performs ha duties to the satisfaction of his electorate and that he seems justified in hie intention to solicit the continuance of its suffrages. The next election will, of conne, show whether his confidence, and that of his . supporters, ,is resting on & sound foundation.
