This Society was called into existence at a public meeting of citizens for the purpose of relieving cases of sickness and destitution which the Relieving Officer could not so well deal with. The frequent appeals to the citizens of Auckland for charitable aid have become burdensome, and the help given being unsystematic, is not oaly Ineffectual, but sometimes wasted on the undeserving. Convinced that the pubUe will be saved much anneyance from begging and expense, and that this organisation will do more real good to the poor and needy than isolated benevolent efforts, the Committee appeal for scrppor:. Thsy will art minister with great care all funds entrusted to them, and cause strict inquiries to be made into sueh applications for relief. Whenever possible, they will try to avert a tendency to pauperism by getting work for men and women, thus makuu them self-reliant. Ton are, therefore, respectfully invited to pay to the Treasurer, or any of the Committee, whatever you may feel disposed to give to enable the Committee to cany oat the above objects. N.B.—The Secretary can be seen irostly any evening at his private residence, Wellesley-street West (Urn* «*®C_' Above Nelson-street), between the hoars of T nt 0.
