ROWING ASSOCIATION REGATTA.

Thi Auckland Rowing Association's Regatta, after having been postponed from the previous Saturday through unfavourable weather, eventuated on Saturday last, and, notwithstanding that the weather was not all that could be wished, proved a great success. The various events were all well contested except the Junior Bona Fide Amateurs' event, which resolved itself into a walk-over for the Auckland Club. In the absence of the s.s. Wellington, the Glenelg was placed at the committee's disposal, anil she waa well patronised by visitors during the afternoon. A brass band was in attendance, and added materially to the pleasure of the day by the discoursing sweet music. The Glenelg, to give her patrons a good view of the different races, followed each from the ■tart to tbe finish. On aocount of the wind, the raoes had to be pulled on the northern shore, starting from the western point of Brick Bay and finishing at the Victoria Wharf, upon which Mr. M. Niccol stationed himself as judge, Captains J. McKenzie and W, F&rquhar fuldlling the duties of starters. Mr. W, Sibbin, in his position as Secretary, was most attentive to his duties and to the comfort of all on board, in whioh he was ably seconded by the committeemen, Messrs. D. Oxley and H. W. Henderson. One matter of general complaint was from the fact that no refreshments were obtainable on board. It appears that the request was made by the steward of the steamer for a permit to dispense refreshments, but his application was not entertained. Some little delay was caused at the start, so that it was fully halfpast two before the first race was seat away. This was the Maid«n Amateurs, 1 mile, for which were the folio wiog entries :— Waitemata B.C. : 1, W. Wait, lOst 81bs; 2, D. Blade, 12st 41 bs; 3, F. Rackstraw, 12st; E. Moore (stroke), lOst 6ibs. North Shore R.C. : 1, A. Logan, 9st 21bs; 2, P. Wood, lOst; 3, W. Swinnerton, 9at Tibs ; W. Wynyard (stroke), 9st 91 b». Pon&Onby R.C. : 1, R. Witt, 9st 81bs ; 2, J. McKay, list 4lbs ; 3, M. Kent, 12at 2lbs; C. iiewson (stroke), 9st I2lbs. On the dropping of the flag the Waitemata Club went to the front, but only for a short duration, whea the North Shoreitea got on level terms with them about off the new dock. From this out a most interesting struggle ensued, the Waitemata Club only winning by a bare half length, whilst the Pousonby crew made a good race. The rowing of all three crews was much admired. The finish waa : — Waitemata 1 North Shore... ... g Ponsonby 3 Skxior Amateurs ; 1 mile and a quarter. Waitemata B.C. : 1, G. Gapes. 12«t 61b ; 2, R. Moore, 13st 21b; 3, W. J McDonnell, 13st 21b ; stroke, F. Fmlay, 13st 81b. Ponsonby R.C. : 1, D. Miller, lOst 81b ; 2, C. G. Leatham, lOst 10lb ; 3, B. Nicholson, list 61b ; stroke, G. E. Smith, 12st 51b. North Shore R C. : 1, W. Greenwood, list ; 2. G. Wynyard, list 51b; 3, F. Duder, 12st 71b ; stroke, E. W. Burgess, 13<t 91b. This race proved a walk over for the North Shore Club, as at no time were they asked to pull. Ponsonby at the start showed good form, and to all appearances appeared to push the crew named pretty hard for the prize ; but they had the misfortune to break one of their oars, and consequently had to give up. The result of the race was North Shore... ... ... ... ... 1 Waitemata ... ... 2 Jcnior Seniors ; 1 mile. Ponsonby R.C. : 1, J. E. Cooke, list; 2, J. Currie, list 2ib; 3, W. K. Gowdie, 12«t 51b ; stroke, H. D. Morpeth, lOst slb. North Shore : 1, S. Von Sturmer. lOst; 2, A. Buchanan, lOst 21b; 3, J. James, 9st 101b ; stroke, J. Webster, list. This race was a moat interesting one, the palling of the North Shore lads being greatly admired, being very regular aud steady, Bhowing careful training. The Ponsonby crew fought pluckily, bat they were not able to make the result of the raee other than North Shore ... i Ponsonby ... ... ... •.. ... o Jvsioh Boha Fidb Amaticrs. 1 mile. Ponsonby R.C.: 1. H. Witt, 9st lOlbs j 2, G. McKay, list lOlbs ; 3. A. Culpan, list; stroke, W. White, lOst 81bs. Auckland R.C : 1, R. Biggs, list 21bs ; 2, R. E. Isaacs, lOst 121bs ; 3, A.W. Gould, list; stroke, J. Baker, list 61be. Ponsonby did not come up to the starting point, so that Auckland had a simple walk over for the prize. As the time waa found to be on, and there were still three more races to be pulled, it was decided to send away the Jcmor Amateurs, 1 mile. North Shore R.C.: 1, A. Logan, 9*t 71bs • 2, W. Slattery, 93tlllbs; 3, W. Wynyard, ®st 91bs; stroke, R. Logan, 9«t Tibs. Waitemata B.C: 1, W. G. Smith, list; 2, H. Slade, 13st; 3, W. Pritchard, 13st 2lbs ; stroke, E. Moore, let 6lbs. Ponsoubv R.C.: 1, W. R. Gowdie. 12st 51bs ; 2, J. Currie, list 21ba ; 3, M. Keefe, 12st 21 bs ; stroke, H. D. Morpeth, lOst 51be ; and also the Amatbur Scullers, 1 mile. North Bhore R.C.: E. Bailey, lOst. v\aitemata 8.C.: T. J. Farquhar, 9«t In quick succession. In the first of the two events the three boats got away well together, and a most exciting struggle commenced, when unfortunately the sliding seat of the stroke of the North Shore boat got adrift, although fixed two or three timeß during the course of the race. The race consequently became a trial of strength between the Ponsonby and Waitemata. 11l lack continoed to attend closely upon Ponsonby, as the event finished as follows :

Waitemata j Ponsonby " [ 2 in the Scullers' Race the representative of the Waitemata Club had to be content with following in the wake of the North Shoreite from almost the start to the finish, nevertheless Farquhar fought gamely to the end, only acknowledging defeat when his rival had passed the winning post.

The last event on the programme was the BENIOK Box a fid i AMATfcUBS. 1 mile and

a quarter.

North Shore R.C. : 1, A. Bargees, lOst • 2, C. n. Burgess, list ; 3, S. McGechie! 13st 3lbs; stroke, E. W. Burgess. Ponsonby R.C. : 1, W. Nicholson, list 51bs • 2, J. E. Cooke, list; 3, W. R. Gowdie, 12st 51b ; stoke, H. D. Morpeth, lOst 61bs. Unfortunately, this proved a complete walk over for the North Shore, and so ended the most successful meeting that the aaao ciation has yet held, and one for which the committee deserve every praise. In connection with this matter it is to be regretted w*' are *9 e aervices of Mr. Sibbin, who ia about to leave Auckland having been transferred to Dunedin. In losing Mr. Sibbin we shall lose a most enthusiastic sportiman, and one who iB always ready to push on all matters appertaining to rowing, football, or crioket. Of the seven events pulled off on Saturday last, the North Shore won four, Waitemata two, and Auckland one.
