Outwards Coastwise. — Margaret Casey, cutter, for Thames; Waitemata, barge, for Whangapoua; Lake Superior, barge, for Thames; Atalanta, schooner, for Tairua; Agnes Martin, ketch, for Thames. The three-masted schooner Rio entered outwards at the Customs yesterday for Newcastle. Thes.s. Ringarooma for Sydney, and Waihora for Russell, both took their departures last evening at about 5.30 p.m. The former vessel was well patronised by passengers but sparsely by cargo. The Waihora returns from Russell to-morrow early, and is to leave for Melbourne via Southern ports at noon the same day. The ship Condoran, which it will be remembered visited this port some few years back, having put in here in distress, left Adelaide for the Uhited Kingdom with a full cargo of grain. She sailed on the 2nd February. On the same date the Ornew, owned by the same lirm, also sailed for the same destination. The asms day the ship Border Chief, under the command of Captain Shierlow, left Port Pirie for London. She had a full cargo of grain, and has the oredit of having obtained the highest rate of freight yet given, viz., 42s 6d. The barqae St. Lawrence was hauled alonglide the ship Brenhilda yesterday morning, and ■he is to commence discharging ballast into the latter vessel to-day. Since her arrival in port In her disabled oondition the St. Lawrence has been snrveyed by Captain Worsp and Mr. C. Bailey, and the discharging of her ballast is in fulfilment of a part of the recommendation of those gentlemen, so that she can be dooked for a fuller Inspection. So far the survey report is of such a nature as ta make it doubtful whether the ownerß will see their way clear to do the repairs necessary to make her seaworthy again. Her late encounters have done more damage to the vessel than was at first anticipated, and 'which only a careful survey has revealed. Lying alongside the ship Brenhilda, she affords an admirable opportunity for those who desire to compare a ship of the modern day with ooe of the past. For years after the building (1861) of the St. Lawrence—then a ship—she held a high repute aa a clipper, and as a passenger ship was sought after by those who were desiring to cross the ocean as being a commodious, comfortable, and fast vessel. There is no question but that the class of vessels to which the St. Lawrence belonged have served their day, and served them well, but they are rapidly passing away, and those left are being forced to give way to the modem school. The St. Lawrence has evidently run her day. and we may -wit expect to see har " p»p up serenely " as a faithful old coal hulk.

. Doling the put twelve months fourteen vessels of different tonnages and power were prepared and launched for the navy; twelve were ordered to be constructed, and at the present time there are ceren others on the stocks which were under court ruction prior to the commencemeat of last yeax. It in stated to be the intentian of the Admiralty to build a new torpedo ■hip. The Hecla, the only vessel of the kind at present in the service, was not originally constructed for the purpose, bat was purchased and converted, like new Hecla will be considerably larger, and will be especially designed to carry first class torpedo boats, of which type the Admiralty intend to add a number te the navy, A Chrirtchurch telegram says Mr. C. W. Turner has received ad-rice that the Ocean Baxter sailed from Newcastle for Timaru on Wednesday. Th» s. i. Bowes* arrived from Mercury Bay at an early hour this morning, with a large Ba»Jb« ef passengers and a general cargo.
