Captain Bain, bieutenaut Crawford, and Sub-lieu-tenant Kerr, were present. There was not a very good muster of members on account of '.he shori m ss of the notice calling the parade, ome of the members having .to; come a distance r.f nine .miles. The Major put tho company through a course of judging distance iln.ll. which was very satisfactorily done. The Major has called another parade for the last Saturday in March when all the members are requested to attend. The company met in the hall after parade 'Or the purpose of electing Dr. E. Leger liraon Honorary Surgeon, to tho company. Captain Bain put it to the: vote when' it was: enrried unanimously. The doctor is Held in ■ high esteem in the .district; and !am sure he will be an acquisition to tne company. It ia quite possible that, the coirpauy."will 'be : represented, by ten men at the.forthcoming prize tiring when it is to bo hoped that they «vill give account' of themselves Jneetingof ,the School. .Committee'oa' the 15th 'Dst, liiey recorded their vote ia t tvour of ..Messrs. paparoa. The Weslryan ciunday-echool anniversary' was held here on the 10? h inst., when two' sermons were preach'd by the Kev. T. J . Wills (of Wairoa), to good .congregations; and a children's service was held in the afternoon 1 when a number of pieces were sung by the: children, anil addresses were given bv Messrn Wills and Wilson, " ' *r. pn Monday the children's picnic was held and 70 to 30 children were gathered together' and nearly as many • adults. Tho flay was fine and a very enjoyable time was spent: There was a public meeting in the Chapel in the evening, when addresses were given by the Revs. C. Abernetliy, T. J. Wills .Messrs.' Cau^hcy, Trounsonj and. ; tho music - ivas select and good;, and was rendered by the choir and the school children. . ,:P n Tuesday: evening,an ..evangelical; meet, ing was held here, conducted by Messrs. R Smith and A.. G. Ciughev. Messrs. Aber.nethy and Wilfs. .also spoke. iThe meeting also.partqok of the nature, of a Holiness meet-' mg. !he Ilobson County Council' drew out plans and speeificationu; and called for tenders; for certain improvements on the maia road, through Paparoa, which are very needful.. But,the works laid out.are of so' colossal , a.nature, that .'some. who,, were at the'trouble to estimate the cost were.deterred from tendering, knowing, that, the Council had. not money to complete the .work. ■ A fair idea of the magnitude of the work'may. be obtained from the: fact that for 37 chains out of 55 chains, the entire length of contract B No. 11,. tho solid .breast <iarth cuttings average some 4ft. in depth. The tenders wera opened .at.. Paparna.cn the 12[h, in. of Councillors Cliff; Isbistor, Rowsell, Bowmar and the County Inspector (Mr Beart). Only one tender was received for B No. 8 contract-.. J. IJodds, £530.; aud for B No. 11, there were two tenders, H. Barton, £ 50 ; J; Dodds, : ; £477, both of which: are sud to, be above.the ■ Engineer's estimate, and neither of the works were lot. It seems as though there is but Bome £40Q to do work worih more than double' the .amount.; and,, to use a. figure of speech, the estimates, appear to be to bring them down within the means of the Cotincil. —[Own Correspondent Feb- 18.] ■'
