The Union Company's steamer Southern Cross came into harbour shortly after daylight on Saturday morning last from Southern ports, and after discharging her cargo of cattle came up harbour and was berthed at the Railway Wharf at ten a.m._ The Cross had moderately fine weather during the trip up. She is to leave again this ervening for Ease Coast ports. Captain Fisher, the newly-appointed DepntyHarbourmjlater, assumes command of his office to-day. The R.Sl.s.s. Penguin is to leave for Fiji, .via Bussell, this afternoon. The p.s. City of Cork with the employes of Messru. McArthur and Co.'s boot and shoe factory, left on a picnic for Motutapu on Saturday last. There was a full attendance on board, and +he proceedings were enlivened by the ■trains of mo/sic given by McComißh's band. The day prorerl a most enjoyable one. The barque Amazon, flying the Swedish flag, came into port on Saturday last, from New York, via Wellington, with a part cargo of general merchandise from the first port named. She sailed the R'ime evening. . The ketch Fanny Kelly sailed for Whasgaroa Saturday last with a general cargo. The cutter Daphne sailed for Suwarrow Island in ballast yesterday morning. She Trent away "with a nice southerly wind. The Tongan Government schooner Sandfly, Captain M. H. Burroll, came into harbour late on Saturday night from Tonga, in ballast. Of the round trip we learn that the Sandfly left Auckland on the 12th ultimo, arriving at Tonga on the 24tb, after a somewhat rough weather passage. Sho left again on the Ist inat., fine weather prevailing until arrival. The schooner TJpolo, from Samoa, was at Tonga when the Sandfly left on the Ist inst. The schooner Kate McGregor is on Messrs. Sims and Brown's slip at the North Shore, undergoing an overhaul before sailing for Raro--tonga. She is expected to sail about this day week. The. brigantine Defiance, from Whangaroa, arrived at Sydney on Friday last, after & smart passage of 13 days. . The s.s. lona, from Russell and Northern |>orti, and Glenelg, from Tauranga, both came into harbour on Saturday last, with passengers -and cargo. They will leave again, the former for Northern porta, and the Glenelg for Tauranga, The s.s. Rowena will leave this evening for Mercury Bay. The Union Oo.'s s.a. Botomahana is dae here this morning, from Southern ports and Melbourne. She is to leave again this evening, for Russell, on an excursion trip, returning at daylight on Thursday morning. At Husiell Bhe will act as flagship on Wednesday for the Bay of Islands Regatta, Tickets for the trip will be issued at 20s each for the return journey.

The barque Planter cleared outwards at the Customs on Saturday, for Whangaroa. . At that iplace she is to load for Launceston with timber. She is to sail to. day.

The ship Weathtirsfield, Captain Sherries, which was here recently, arrived at Melbourne on January 20th last, with a cargo of 700 tons sagar— juat enough to stiffen her. She goes from Melbourne to London with wool.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamthip Doric took her departure for "Wellington and London on Saturday last, shortly betore bix o'clock. The ti.u© announced for the sailing of the steamer vras noon, bat it was found that as the time drew near thore was more cargo to get out than was expected, consequently the time of sailing had to be extended. However, at 5 p.m. orders were diven to caßt off, and shortly afterwards Captain Burgess took command as pilot, and just before 5.30 p.m. the Doric steamed slowly ahead up the harbour, and takine a turn over under the North Shore she went down the harbour under easy steam. At 6 p.m. she passed round the North Head, going full speed ahead. The following is the quantity and value of the cargo on board from this port for London :—
