HKNRY RIDINGS, Ketuming Officer. . Febrnary 8,1881. 228 A.N O T HE R F- I - JR. E. I L _£%:' WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF FIRE. The most fruitful sources of fires are—the careless use of matches, candle flame coming in contact with window curtains or bedhanffings, the mismanagement, of kerosene lamps, and the leaving of ordinary household lamps untended. Matches should x-lwys be kept on a high shelf out of the leach of children. When employed in stores, warehouses and factories they should be protected from mice by means of proper metal boxes. Care should be taken not to sxop unlighted matches, nor to throw down unextlnguished matches carelessly on the floor Never leave a lighted candle unwatched near hanging drapery, especially if there be an open window in the room. Heading in bed by candle-light is a p actice very much to be condemned, and a burning candle should never be suffer to remain after the inmates of the house are asleep. Gas' should be turned off at the main when not in use. In case an escape should be strongly smelt, turn off at once from the main and set open the doors and windows, but on no account take a lighted candle into the room till the small has passed off Never pile up partially burnt wood against the chimney ; scores of houses have been burn«d in this way in New Zealand. Never put firewood inside the fender or oh tho stove to dry. Paper, clothing, or similar combustible material shouldi never be loft near the grate: Ashes should never be thrown away against a wooden building, or kept Ic a wooden box or barrel. The above hints relate to the pasysNTlOS OP FIRS. When unfortunately a fire (foes occur, remember that wet blankets »nd ruits economise the supply of water, and are more effectual in preventing thupread of fire than water simply thrown on, and at the same time canse less damage to furniture. In the hurry and confusion of a fire doors and windows are too apt to be thrown open; they should be kept sbut as much as possible. Firo can only spread rapidly when it ia plentifully supplied with »ir. Have your chimneys regularly swept, at fixed intervals ; at lea«t once in three months — WHAT TO DO AFTER A FI3E. The assured must use his best endeavours to save and protect his property during the fire and afterwards and until an ofllcer of the Insurance Company arrives, he should act precisely as he would if he had no insurance whatever, i.e., do all in hi* tower to pbetbnt fokther loss on DAiiAOE. This is especially necessary where the loss is on merchandise or chattels, it being a mistake to suppose that gooda damaped by or in consequence of a fire must be allowed to remain in the chaotic condition into which a fire generally throws them, to await inspection by the adjuster. On the contrary, they should first of all be removed (if necessary) to a safe, dry place, and everything done that is requisite to prevent further shrinkage ot values. After this they should be straightened aad assorted, the damaged separated from the sound, and the whole correctly invoiced. The policies make thisapiMt of tho duty devolving upon , the assured, and pr n.*pt, intelligeint compliance with this condition is calculated to facilitate the adjustment of losses. As I'he goodii saved from a (ire belong to the ass ed they cannot be abandoned to the Underwriters, but the Companies are liable for all damage thereto so far as the policies will reach. WH.VT TO DO BEFORE A FIRE. Effect a policy of Insurance with the NEW ZEALAND INSURANCE COMPANY, whore every description of Insurances are taken at Lowe-it Rates r Premium. I GEOEGE P. PIBRCE, - .
