COMMERCIAL.

Niw ZIAL.UID Herald Office. Thursday evening. THE Customs receipts to-day were £1452 15s 7d. - Business has shown a fair amount of activity during the past week, and orlers have been coming in much more freely from the country. Orders, however, have not been for more than to meet the present wants, there being an evident disinclination to do business of a speculative character. The arrival of the steamship Doric, from London, and the s.s. Waihora, from Sydney, and the Manapouri, from Melbourne, via Southern portß, has had the effect of adding very -materially to stocks on hand, bus the goods received are of those sorts that may be classed as seasonable, and will consequently go into immediate consumption. The kauri gum market still continues to uhowiisigns of briskness, and prices remain firm. The" lower sorts of gum, however, are somewhat harder of sale, attention being principally given to the better sorts. ' The flout market still' continues fairly brisk, a good consumptive demand being experienced. The brigantine Stanley is on the berth loading for Noumea with about 400 tons in further completion of contract made with the Fretoh Government. The arrival of the s.s. Penguin from Fiji has again supplied the market with fruitg, such as'bananas and pineapples. The prices realised are reported to be satisfactory. - Messrs. B. Tonks and Co., held a sale to-day 'at rooms of landed paoperties of the late Mr. David White. There was a good attendance, and the bidding waa spirited. The following lots were sold :—Lot 1, allotment 35, oorner. of Beresford-street, £1630, C. Williamson;'2; lot 191, near main road, Remuera, £211 15s, Edmund Bell; 3, 452 acres, Hunua, £181 4s, and 4, 327 acres, £130 16s, Robert White ; 5. 560 apres, Maraetai, £168, John Abbott; 7, Karaka, 88 aores, £25 16s, Peter Robinson ; 8, 96 acres, Papaltura, £120. LIVE STOCK AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Ij AUCKLAND. I'

Mr. Alfred Buckland's Webkly Report.—-At the Hayroarket oh.Friday, February 1, fodder was ill limited supply, and advanced in price to 6s the cwt. Good horde stock in steady demand at late valnes, but inferior animals were dull of sale. At the wool, hide, and skin sale, on Tuesday, 40 bales of wool brought fully late values, ranging from 4jd to 5Jd the lb. Hides were In larger than usual number, and of better quality. Best brands brought from 4d to 4fcd the lb.; tallow, 19s to 31s 8d the cwt.; skins, from Is to 2s 3d each. At the Waiuku cattle sale, on Saturday last, there was a numerous muster of stoak, and a full attendance of settlers. Prices were satisfactory throughout, and at Pukekohe, on Monday, there was also a good muster of cattle, principally young stock, and all yarded were sold at late values. At the sheep fair, held at Remuera on Tuesday, there wb4 a limited number of stock yarded, less that at any i time since the commencement of sheep fairs, but a good Inquiry for young ewes, which were about 3s each higher in price than last year. Aged aheep and culls were, however, at lower values. Fair to good two and four-tooth ewes ranged from 13s to 20s : if in low condition, 8s to lis ; aged sheep, from 3s each. Young rams», about 100 yarded. Lincoln and Leicester brought from 2 guineas to S guineas each; 13 black faces, 3 guineas to 5 guineas each, and all sold; aged rams, from 7s to 18s each. At the Remuera Yardf, on Thursday dairy eows near calving were in request; store cattle dull of sale; fat cattle in full number; choice animals, thoroug&ly fatted, from 7 to 9cwt. each, brought from 20s to 22s per lOOlbs, but medium cows and light weight steers were from 15s to 18s. Fat sheep in less number than for soveral markets, but priccs were lower about 2s each, and several pens held over. Lambs were is moderate number, but, being weaned, are falling off in condition, and for those (although of large frame) unsatisfactory prices are obtained, at the same time those of good quality were eagerly sought for at late values. Young store pigs were in brisk demand at extreme prices, also dairy and house-fed porkers. Fat calves were in short supply, and brought good priees. Averages were: 52 steers, A. Hastie. £8 3s 6d; 8 steers, W. Taylor, £8 ; 11 steers, J. C. Firth, £8 8s ; 39 steers, Jno. Wallace, £6 10s; 12 cows. J. C. Firth, £3 17s 6d ; 250 sheep, A. Hastie, 14s ; 50 lambs, J. and C. Gould, 10s 6d ; 26 lambs, H. Hill, 10s ; 32 do., J. Heath, 9s 6d; 48 do., Storey, 8s 9d. Messrs. Hunter and Nolan's Report.—Horses: The supply has been equal to the demand, but heavy draught stock is still inquired for. At the Durham Yards, on Friday, there was a very good muster, and a fair attendance of buyers, and for good stock, either hacks or draught, there was plenty of competi* tion. We quote: Hacas, from £6 to £17: medium draught, from £13 10s to £22; heavy draught oolts, from £22 10s to £27; hoavy draught, with trial, £38 to £57. Hides: But very few pitched, and sold at an advance on last week's rates. ~3kius. from lid to 2s lOd. Cattle: There has been an improvement in the price of all kinds of stock during tne week. At the Junction Yard* Taosday, there were more than the usual of dairy and store nook, The number fat cattle yarded being barely up to requirements caused the bidding to be more animated than on the previous week, and prices Had an upward tendency. At Papakura on Wednesday, there was more than the average number of store stock yarded, buyers were numerous, and all lots lu were disposed of at prices satisfactory to vendors. We quote : Calves. 19s to 255; yearllncs, £1 7s 6d to £1 19s ; dry cows, £2 to £3 ss; two-year-old steers, £3 to £3 15s; three-year-old steers, £4 5s to£s 2*6 d ; dairy cows, £6 to £8 ss.
