Donald yesterday purchased the schooner Hate McGregor, "which he intends to put in the Island trade, in the place of one of the three vessels recently lost at Rarotonga. The Hate XfoGregor is a vessel of 65 tons, and though she lm not new, is a staunch, well built, and good Baa-going vessel. The brif;ahtine Stanley will take her depari tux© for Noumea to-day. She has on board a cargo of tone 020 tons flnur. The Union Company's steamship Waihora took he.r departure for Melbourne, via Southern ports, -yesterday afternoon. By her was sent_ a large portion of the cargo of the s.s. Doric, from London. This has been done so that the Doric on arrival at Wellington and Lyttelton will have so little cargo to put out that she will be able to take on beard her homeward cargo . without delay. Tho s.s. Glenelg, from Tauranga,'and Rowena, from Mercury Bay, both arrived in harbour i yesterday morning, with passengers and cargo. ! They left again last evening, the former for Xaurangti, the latter for Whangarei. The Aurora came up harbour, and wai berthed at the Railway Wharf yesterday. She oommenced to discharge her Sydney cargo without delay. Captain Fisher, the newly-appointed DeputyHarbourmaster, will commence hU duties on Menday next. The' s.s. filacgregor, from Whangarie, came into harbour about 1 o'clock this morning with a number of passengers, and the following ' cargo :—350 cases fruit, 75 sacks gum, 50 saoks potatoes, 12 hhds. ale, 20 boxes eggs, 3 bales' ' •wool, 6 crates fowls, 10 saoks seed, and 3 tons sundries. Tha Omapare arrived from the South at balfpasc time o'clock this morning. Captain AllmaD rep orts of the passage up as follows Left -Port CTnalmers at 10 p.m. on 29th ult. and ar- : rived 'at Oamaru at 5 a.m. on 30th ; sailed again laam?. day at 8.30 p.m., and arrived at Timaruat •« &Jm. on 31st ; left Timaru at 2 p.m. same day, |anarrived at Napier at 2 p.m. on 2nd inst.; iJef.t Napier at 8.30 p.m. on 4th,, arriving at r<?lsborne at 5.30 a.m. on sth; left Gisborne -V>ame day at 3 p.m. ; rounded East Cape at :'3 a.in. on 6th, arriving at Tauranga the same ' day at 7 p.m.; left Tauranga at noon on 7tb, y*&nd arrived at Auckland as above. From Port ' Chalmers to Napier experienced light winds jond fins weather; from 1 Napier to East ■fOape, fresh northerly winds; from East Cape to Tauranga, strong westerly winds and head B ea; and from Tauranga, light north-east grinds and fine weather to arrival. The proceeds on to Grey mouth .at 4 o'clock this afternoon. ■■ Fine weather enabled Captain Nearing to do good work in getting out the cargo from the 'steamship Doric yesterday, and as a result i consignees and carters were kept hard at work 'in taking delivery of their goods. In connection with the discharging of this vessel at this port, it is only fair to Captain Nearing, the stevedore, to atato that he has not only to take out what cargo there is for this port (some 2040 tons, of this 900 tons is railway iron), but he ifau also to discharge here the greater portion of- ' the Southern cargo on - board. This is done witb & view to giving the Doric a chanoe to at once take in cargo immediately on her arrival j.' Bt both Wellington and Lyttelton. Were this exjplaaation not given, people would be apt to judge -na as being exceedingly slow to take some six ; 'or seven days to put out only 2000' tons. The ' 3>oric will only be the bearer herself of Bome 500 . 'tons of stuff for her other ports of call. The balance landed here will be sent on by the boats of the Union Company. It is not at all surprising that the underwriters should try and do something to enable ; them, to successfully resist the claim of the -owners of the Triumph from recovering the amount of the insurance money (some £55,000), when such cablegrams are sent to London as of which we give a copy below. These cablegrams are most startling, and yet the home people in the face of such news receive in a few day* afterwards the still further startling news - the.t the vessel iB successfully floated, and safe in the harbour of' Auckland. The cablegrams weire published in London, at Lloyd's, we presume the day after their dates given. The £at message sent is dated " Auokland, December 7, 1.35 p.m. Triumph ashore, and will f>robably be a total wreck." The next message ■ from " Wellington, December 12. The ■te&mer Triumph, from London for Auokland, which recently struck on a rock in Hauraki Gulf, is now breaking up, and will be a total lou."

■I . ■ LAUNCH.

Yeiterday was the day fixed upon by Mr. Macquarrie for the launching of the fine ■ohsoner built by him to the order of Captain Johnson, Tho day was all that oould be desirsd, and as a result a large and interested crowd assembled at the builder's yards to witness the ceremony. Two p.m. was the hoar fixed upon for the launoh, and at that hoar activity became the erderof the day, all hands ■working in the yards being set to work to "wedge up," and in other ways get all ready for the launch. , In the meantime the orthodox bottle of champagne (presented to the owner by Mr. D. McGregor) was hung from the bows of the Teasel, and tho important duty of christener was entrusted to MissEmma J. Richards. Shortly after-the hour named Mr. Macquarrie, finding all was in . readiness, gave the order to " oat chisels and . .down dogs," but the vessel hung fire, and the assistance «f a a crew-jack had to be obtained. Then the vessel began to glide down the ways, and as Bhe did so Miss Richards named the vessel, the Waireka, and wished the vessel and her owner succeis. Unfortunately, after the vessel took tho water aft, her stern stuok in the znnd, and her farther progress was stayed, and the ways at this time being unable to bear the strain, gave way, and the vessel dropped between them. Steps were at once taken with a view to finishing the launching, but although every effort was made with powerful screwjieka, lent by Messrs. Eraser said- Tinne, the vessel Wonld not bud?e, and cfter some three hours'hard work further attempts had to be postponed until to-day, -whan it is expected Mr. Macquarrie will be mora successful. The result of tho launch ■wis most disappointing, and general regret was expressed for Mr. Macquarrie under the ciroum■tance, all the more so from the faot that all previous launches have proved so gucoessJ fq}i Tn a. previous iaiuo we gave a fall detailed

! description of this vessel, so that there is nothing on.that head to add to what -we iixve already published.
