THE ROTORUA TOWNSHIP.
We have received an "emphatic protest" from Dr. Campbell, against our having used his name as one of the authors of the Kotorna Township site. It appears he did not even know a township waa in contemplation until the survey was completed. We certainly did wonder how the artistic doctor could have committed himself to such a selection. His repudiation will be found in another column. Our own defence for mentioning his name is, however, complete, and we believe he will thank ns for bringing the subject up, as he will now be able to put the blame on the right shoulders. We will now proceed to astonish Dr. Campbell. In introducing the Thermal Springs Act of hut session, which was to patch up the faulty Bill of ISSI, but which has failed in that respect, the Hon. SirF. Whitaker said :—" He might say that, before Government determined on a site for the town, they asked Dr. Hector, the Engineer in charge (Mr. Hale), the Assistant Surveyor-General (Mr. Percy Smith), Mr. Fenton (the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court), and Dr. Campbell to report upon the matter; and these gentlemen, after a great deal of thought and deliberation, decided upon the present site as the best for the town." and so on, as will be found set down in Hansard, vol. 46, p. 340. Again, in the House of Representatives on September 3, when he was challenged that the town was in a bad situation, Mr. Rolleston stated :—" The Government township was selected by Dr. Hector; Dr. Camphell, of Auckland ; -Mr. Percy Smith, Mr. Fenton, and some others, who went down for the express purpose."
