THE RAWLINGS SCHOLARSHIPS.
The result of the examinations for the Rawlings Scholarships were made known on Saturday. It will be remembered that these scholarships were the gift of the late Mr. Rawlings, and among other stipulations in his thoughtful and generous bequest, he provided that they should be only open to boys under )2 years of age, the sons of working people. These scholarships are worth £10 per annum, and entitle the holders to free education for four years at the Auckland College and Grammar School. About 40 candidates presented themselves from the various town and suburban schools for the four scholarships offered. The result was as follows James Drummond, Nelsonstreet, 1 ; Francis Stewart, Nelßon-sfcraet, 2 ; Robert McCullough, Newton East, 3; William Munro, iNewton West, 4. It will be seen that Nelson-street carries off the first and second honouns. Mr. George Thwaites was the teacher who prepared the two lads for the examination, and the outcome must be very gratifying to that gentleman.
