Sydnry, September 26. The drought last year, and the absence of rain so far this year in the back country, is having its effect upon the colony in the stagnation of trade, and tightness of the money market. Rain is much wanted. The last of the demonstrations in favour of the Government before the re-assembling of Parliament took place at Newcastle. It was reported that the Premier would have made an explanation of policy, but it was not forthcoming. The acceptance of the Bishopric of Sydney by Canon Barry has been formally announced in St. Andrew's Cathedral. The mailboat Australia arrived late on Friday Dight, butwas not boarded by the health officers until Saturday morning. During a thunderstorm at Bathurst a man was strnck dead at his farm. _ On Monday morning, the 24th, an explosion of gas took place in a sewer. Some damage was done, and one child was hurled into the air and injured, necessitating hospital treatment. The actsal cause of the explosion has not yet been ascertained, but it is believed that some defiant gas made its way into the sewer. Mrs., Sampson's mission has been most successful. The nightly attendance has averaged five thousand. An inquest is proceeding into the death of a woman named Elizabeth Phillips at Wooloomooloo. The evidence has disclosed fearful brntality and revolting particulars. Fifteen yonng men oriminally assaulted the woman, and left her naked in a cave during a pouring rain all night. In the morning she was found dead.

Barrett, solicitor. lln this ease the iury, as we have been informed by cable, were unable to agree.] At a meeting of the Church Assembly, the Bishop paid a very high compliment to Canon Barry, as a leader of thenght, as master of assemblies, an able administrator, as a maintainor of Evangelistic truth, a friend of all churches, and a large-minded man.
