Wanganot, Monday. -|ilj| : The grand military funeral accorded the late | ;-| Mete Kingi took place at the Mission ceme- J ff, tery, Patiki, this afternoon, in the presence WM of 5000 spectators, and 1100 Maoris from all | j|j parts of the North Island. The pall-bearers were twelve chiefs of high rank, including ' Major Kemp, Wi Faraha, and Reuata of fMi Hawkc's Bay, The Native Minister, the' iUrfi Mayor of Wanganni (Mr. Gilbert Carson), fpf Mr. Watt, M.H.R, Mr. Lewis (Under. §)sjj Secretary, Native Office), and other official?,. -. §Sjj|jj and a crowd of Europeans and Maoris, fol». Mffi lowed the coffin from the pa to the grave* . tejj About 230 volunteers were present, under fliMl the command of Major Stapp, and fired threa oFjsS volleyß ever the grave. The burial service— that of tin Church of England—was read by fe||3 the Rev. T. S. Grace and three Maori mm clergymen. The day was fine and warm, 9is|j| and was observed as a close public holiday.. \4m Mr. Grace delivered a short address at the §©$ grave, first in Maori and then in English, ISM referring to' Mete Kingi's friendship and aer- j|M vices to the pakeba, and his loyal anpport of ' | jH» ; the Government.
