THE NEW ZEALAND CUP HANDICAP AGAIN. |BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Christohtjroh, Monday. Under the heading of "A Bad Handicap and its Disastrous Consequences," the Times has an article on the New Zealand Cup Handicap. It says that, as was pointed- out when the weights came out, Tasman was let in much too easily, and many other horses shamefully treated. Tasman under a heavy weight so easily beat at Geraldine horses he has to meet in the New Zealand Cup that he must frighten out nearly every animal engaged. The handieappers never visited the big Dunedin meeting; not one ot them has attended Geraldine, and they must therefore get their ideas of horses' form at Becond-hand. The article, which is evidently aimed at the system of a committee of handieappers as opposed to a single paid official, concludes :—" We feel quite sure that the field for the New Zealand Cup must be a weak one, as we don't think that many owners will be found rich enongh and foolish enough to make their final payments when they havs no chance of success. And this state of things is sure to continue until we have an experienced handicapper who is placed in such a position that he can visit every meeting, forming his own judgment of the horses' performances, and being in no way dependent on that most-unreliable of all things—the information of the many, or the perhaps biassed opinions of a chosen few."
