LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
[BY TBLEORAPH. —OWN COKKESPONDEST.] Wellington, Saturday. THE FEDERAL CONFERENCE. Me. WniTAKEB's consent' to be one of the representatives of the colony at the Sydney Conference was not -definitely received till this afternoon, but the matter is now decided, and New Zealand will be represented by the Premier and the ex-Premier, whichis probably the moat satisfactory arrangement that conld have been devised. I may add that the New Zealand representatives will go with a strong conviction of the desirableness of taking all available steps to prevent the flooding of the Pacific Islands with the scum of Fiance and the worst tpye of French criminals. THE AGENT- GENERALS B IP. I notice a rumour has been going round for some time that Mr. Walter Johnston, on resigning the Public Works and going homo next autumn, will succeed Sir F. Dillon Bell aa Agent-General. I believe lam warranted in saying that this report has not the slightest foundation in fact, and that there is no present likelihood of Sir F. D. Sell resigning, or any probability that when he does resign he will be succeeded by Mr. Walter Johnston. *T should be disjwsed to point in quite a different direction. a if asked f o naite Sir F, D. Bell's 'most probable successor. : THE REVENUE. It is premature to forecast the result oi the financial half year, which closes to-day, bntl have every reason to believe the revenue will prove to be fully equal to half of the estimate for the full year in spite of the falling off some months since.
