Ak. amusing cage of- impersonation , has come >td light, in .Liverpool, "England. Late one ■ night.last month a fashionably ;>,ttire<l person, who appeared, to be a woman of "queitiomiblo' character,, was lodged in gaol on a chargo of having stolon a gold brea3t-pin'from a young man named Thomas Buxton, of Sheffield. .The prisoner- was searched by .the female' searcher; hut'as she handed over all the money and articles in her possession when, requested, no suspicion was arqusod as to whether or u'ot-sho_ belonged, to the' "fair sex." The ■breast-pin having beeu dropped .by- the ■pris'im'er A-hen given into custody, it was not deemed necessary to thoroughly soarch her. Ou the following day the prisouer.was'placed iii the dock before the judye, and sustainedthe >;Wc'which she had assumed with -the utmost ability'and-composure., Thu "'pro', secu tor said that ho was coming out."of the Royal Court Theatre-'"when- the prisoneri.ceo3ted him and a-skod him to pay', for'-a' driok, and, on his refusal, euatobed his breast- ■ pin and rauaway. Prosecutor followed and afttr a lonp chase caught the prisoner, and handed her over to. a eonstablfc. -She''.was convicted and sentenced to six months', hard labour, the learned stipendiary 'remarking that she belonged to a most dangerous clsss. The prisoner thanked his ■ Worship, and was removed bulow and was afterwards,taken- to' Walton gaol, whore • the denoueinent :'.'■ took place, for an arrival there the prisoner threw off the mask and informed the female warder into whose custody'ho had been handed that "she", belonged to the masculine sex and tnas "her" name in reality was' Henry Cab.il. It was'then ascertained that the prisoner waa a man who had been previously convicted for a trifling offence. - |
