POINT CHEVALIER HIGHWAY DISTRICT.

A MEEHNa of ratepayers, convened by the Chairman of the District Board, was held | last evening at the Northern Hotel, under j the provisions of the Public Works Act, I relative to the closing of a road. In regard to this application there existed a good deal of misapprehension. The road affected is that leading from the Western Springs past Mr. Motion's property to the iMew Northroad. An impression prevailed that the proposal Was to close this road, and a good deal of- local feeling has been manifested. It transpired, however, that there was no such intention." It appears that two roads have been surveyed which run into and adjoin ■each other. One is made, and that it is proposed to- maintain, bat the other nas not been touched, and this is the road which it is proposed to close, Mr. Edgecombe had issued circulars in regard to the matter calling a meeting for noon yesterday, as the Board's advertisement had not specified the "hour of meeting, but this was not attended. There was a large attendance at the meeting last night, and Mr. Crawford, Chairman of the District; Board, presided. Mr. C. S. S. George was in attendance to explain plans, &c., if necessary.—Toe Chairmaa read the advertisement convening the meeting, and reminded those present that only ratepayers would be entitled to take part in the meeting or vote.—Mr. John Lawrence proposed the following resolution :—"That portion of a road in the western boundary of allotment No. 40, and part of allotment 39, and boundary of allotments Nos. 39 and 3S of section No. 5 of the suburbs of Auckland, commencing at a point 240 links from the north-western corner oi the said allotment. No. 40, and coloured red on the plan lodged for inspection at the Northern Hotel be stopped, but so that it will not in any way interfere with the road now used and known as the Cabbage-tree Road."—Mr. Oliver seconded the resolution.—A letter was received from Mr. W. Murlin, of Mount Albert (presented by Mr. Edgecombe), complaining that the clusing of the road would depreciate the value of his property, aud so he should oppote the closing of the road.— Mr. JEdgecombsinadean explanation as to the road and the original surveys. He claimed that the fence on which the pre3ent road was made and on which the land was sold was illegal. The old road took a gradual sweep, while the new one had a V angle, at which two accidents hadalready occurred, one to Mr. R. Garrett, who was thrown from his horse, and the other to a van b-longing to the Union Sash and Door Company, which would not have happenedhad the road been con linued as it ought to have been. He asked what tenefit it would be to the district to close the road which to be opened, or why they should give their patronage to an illegal act ? He had proposed to the late • Chairman that Mr. Motion's house should be saved, although it /was a chain and a half en the road.—The Chairman said Mr. Edgecombe had promised not to oppose this • proposition.—Mr. Lawrence said it seemed to him that what they had met to consider -was, whether they should have two roads or one?— Mr. Edgecombe said he did not -want either closed, but that which it was proposed to close was the original road.— After some further discussion, the motion ■was pat and carried, Mr. Edgecombe voting against it. —This concluded the business.
