ST. PAUL'S AND EMILY PLACE,
The following letter, which had been received from Mr. Ash ton, Secretary of St. Paul's Vestry, was read at the metting of the City Council last evening:— "Dear Sir, —I have the honour, by the direction of St. Paul's Vestry, to acknowledge receipt of your let:er oF the 19th instant, to the Chairman of the vestry, offering, on behalf of the City Council," a' site at the junction of Alten-road arid Symonds-street, or one at the junction of Alexandra, Wakefield, and Symondg Streets, in exchange for that now occupied by St. - Paul's Church. In reply, lam instructed to inform you that neither of the sites offered by the City CouncU meet with the approval of the vestry of St, Paul's; ;also, . that the vestry are prepared to accept ' the site upon - which the present ■ police; barracks and armoury are erectcd;; togethar : with • the vacant allotments adjoining."
The Mayor a'aid ;.that-the committee had' been authorised to negotiate with.the vestry, andit would be well to leave the matter in their hands. He . moved'that it be referred to the Financed Committee.
Mr. Crowther; suggestsd that a deputation of tbe vestry.should meet the committee; This would enable them to push on the business, and they could ascertain whether the vestry were in favour of the work. Mr. Hakper agreed with the suggestion; It was opposed' by Mr. Garratt, who objected to any fiirtber'concession. Let the. Council go on with'the worb'i and chance-.the matter of compensation. Mr. Thompson, supported Mr. Crowther's suggestion, and Mr. PHiLLiPPs aUo spoke in favour of it. .
Mr. Field' thought: this was-a matter of detail, which- fehould be ;left .to 'the committee.
Finally the matter was; referred to the Finance Committee.
