The brigantine Defiance Bailed for Whangarei last evening. > From there she takes on a, cargo ef coal for the Kaipara, thence she will proceed to Dunedin ■wit'h timber, loading back grain for Auckland. The cutter Deveron, after a somewhat protracted trip to Whangamata, retnrned to barbour yesterday morning, with a cargo of kauri gum. The cause of her delay at the port named was owing to a scarcity of cargo. The schooner Sarah Pile wa3 berthed at the -Queen-street Wharf yesterday, for the purpose of discharging her inward cargo. The barque India has been taken into dock, ■where she is receiving a thorough overhaul, preparatory to sailing upon another voyage amongst the Islands. The barque Glance, hence for London, was passed on Monday last, off the Alderman'd. She was at the time bowling along under all •canvas, and making good way off ourcoast. The s.s. Wellington has been hauled under the large crane at berth L of the Queenstreet wharf, and during yesterday the workmen were busily engaged taking out her .machinery. This steamer, once the pride of the Mow Zealand.coaat trade —fitted up in a style -which a, few years back was considered perfection—now presents all the appearances of a -wreck. Outside she has the look of abandonment, whilst internally she is almost completely gutted, but a few weeka hence the Wellington will present a totally different appearance. What with a complete alteration internally— new machinery, and the now celebrated new smoke stack—she will once again come up to that position in nautical society which she a few years past held, and from which she was so rudely thrust by speedier and more luxurious venaels. The Northern Company deserve every praise for their endeavours, so far as relates to this vessel, to keep pace with the times. If we may be permitted to say so, we think there one or two others of the line of the Northern Steamship Company that would be none the yrorse for a little attention being paid to their internal arrangements, so far as relates to the passenger comforts. The company ehould at all times bear in mind {hat; speedy boats, well and comfortably famished for passengers, will always create a trade, whilst ill-fitted and slow, uncomfortable boats are bound sooner or later to provoke opposition. Those boate in which the comfort and convenienco of the travelling public are most studied are bound to carry the jay.

Tile ship Grasmere is expected to be ready for aea abont the end of the present week. She is boned hence for Newcastle, and thence on to San Francisco. Yesterday she commenced to bend sails, a auro indication that she is about ready for .sea. The s.e. Waihora proceeded on to Eussell last evening lor a supply of coal. On Friday morning she returns here, and goes on for Melbourne, via Southern ports, the same day, sailing at noon. Shipping business was again dull daring yesterday, all movements being confined to coasting veesels. Of these there were several ■departures, the principal being the Waihora, 3.5., for Ruseell, and the brigantine Defiance, for WhangareL THE STEANDED SCHOONER AT POET WAIKATO. •Our Waiuku correspondent writes :—" Th 9 stranded schooner Williiam and Jane still lies at Fort Waikato. She has been greatly lightened, and the captain is waiting until the tides make, to try and get her off. It is strange no one has been to see anything about her. I believe the vessel is insured in the "United, a Sydney office." i?ORT OF ONEHUJNGA. AERIVALS. Donglae, 5.8., McArthur, from'Waitara. Passengers: Miss Whitting and Mr. Forbes.—A. Barnee, agent.
