CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

An adjourned meeting of the committee was held yesterday evening, in the school building of City East; Mr. J. G. Carr in the chair. Present: Messrs. Offer, Ryan, War« burton. Behesfokd-stkeet School.—A letter was received from the Board of Education iarespect to the appointment of a second assistant master, to the effect tnat Mr. Boler had been appointed temporarily and upon trial for three months. Mr. H. B. Willsoa is removed. ..- Wellesley-Street School. — A letter was received from the Board to tho effect that the defect in the roof had been attended to. Nelsgx-Street School.—A letter waa received from the Board announcing that the Board had authorised the temporaryemployment of Mr. Arthur Mabbit (probationer) during the absence of the second assistant master; also to the effect that Miss Lily P. Grice, pupil teacher, is removed to Nelsonj street, Mus Burton assistant, and Miss Coleman (probationer), have been removed from Nelaoa-strest to ether schools where their services are required.—The Board announced its intention to appoint as an. assistant, Miss Helen A. Hossack, who had been trained in the Dunedin Training College.—The Secre* tary of the Board of Education (in accordance with section 45 of the Act) asked the opinion of the Board as to the proposed appointments. —Mr, Kyan thought that some indication of the reasons for removal of teachers should be given.—Mr. Offer wa3 of the same I opinion, when there was a satisfactory teacher, there was a desire to retain his or 1 her services.—The Secretary was instructed 'to inform the Board of Education of the mind of tho Board. Mb. W. J. Bbovto. —A letter was received from the Board, enclosing resolution as to charges against'late "acting second master I of Wellesley-street school."

Fbeemas's Bay.—A letter wag received from the ■ Board of Education asking the names, ages, and residences of the children not attending school in this district. —It had been stated by the committee in a letter to the Board that 237 children of school age were not attending school in the district.— Resolved that the information be forwarded to the Board. City School Botfxdasy.—The Board also asked a return of the number of children "in each city school who reside outside the boundaries of the city school district."-—The Chairman thought that if there less than 200 children, the Board would not build.—Consideration of the subject deferred pending inquiry being made.

School Age.—Letters were received from the committees of the Onehunga, Whareheke, Tararu, Maungakaramea, and other schools approving of the view that it is not desirable to alter, the school age from five to seven years.

Requisition.—A resolution was passed to the effect that if Mr. Harrison (Beresfordhtreet) would forward a requisition (exclusive of desks) the committee would forward the same to the Board. Reform in Dress.—The circular of the Board was received, and a resolution passed that the same be exhibited in each school. Finances.—The liabilities at the ead of the year were estimated at £97. There would be a claim for one-third cost of fuel and for £10 at the end of tho yeir; balance in bank £62 83 7d.—The Chairman said that six rooms would require to be cleaned. That would cost some money. The rooms were in a shameful state. He believed that.the Board would not see the committee in a difficulty under the circumstances.. If it should be resolved to ask the Board to paint the fiii'dma that would come within the province of the 80.-rd, and the cleansing might be deferred until that were done.—Mr. Ryan objected to any responsibility for expenditure which devolved properly on the Board, ' —Mr. Warburton. eaid the cleansing was part of the province of tb,e committee. He thought the Board might well be asked to do the painting.—The Chairman said the suggestion was that the painting should be done in, the same manner as that of the rooms of the Training College. The looms there had a very comfortable and pleasant aspect.—lt was resolved that the Board should be requested to have the rooms done as.at the Training College. • -Cleaning Walls.—lt was resolved that the attention of the cleaners should be directed to the walls of schoolrooms where they required to be cleansed. # Bibd Nuisance.—lt was agreed that the louvre openings in the roof of the school buildings should be covered with wire netting to keep oat the birds. , ■ f ark. —It was agreed that the Secretary should request the teachers to warn the children against scattering their lunch papers in the Paik, in respect to which carelessness the Park keeper had made many complaints. ..Accounts. —The monthly accounts were brought up and payment authorised.
