POLICE COURT.—WEDNESDAY.

Before Messrs. ff. J. Hnret and B. DeC. Martelli J.P.'s.] Drunkenness.—Four persona were punished for .first, and three for second offences. Maria Price, for a third offence, was fined 20s and cO3ta, or, in default, seven days' imprisonment, with hard labour. Charge of Embezzlement. —John Louis Thompson, alias Thomas Thompson,.surrendered to his bail on a charge of embezzling £1, the property of. William Lilly England, of Normanby, and stealing £14 the property of Andrew Neilson, of Inglewood. Mr. Napier, appeared for the defence. Sergeant White said the prisoner was arrested on two warrants for offences committed in 1881, since which the police hid been searching for the man who committed the offence. The defendant's descripton exactly corresponded with that in the Gazette, bnt the police were now satisfied that this man was not the offender, and would therefore offer no evidenee. Mr. Napier said that a little inquiry would have convinced the polioe that his client was not the offender, and there was nothing to justify his arrest. The case was a most painful one to Mr. Thompson and his family, for he was a man who occupied responsible positions. He commented on the action of the police in the case. St-rg?ant White said Mr. Mapier went too far, for the police, from the information they had received, were fully justified in making the arrest,' and they had made most diligent inquiries. The defendant was then dis charged. Railway Regulations.—Roderick Lorenson was charged with a breach of the railway regulations by getting on a carriage while in motion on the Auckland and Helensville railway. The information in this case was withdrawn.

Malicious Injury to Property.—Henry Trace' and John Phillips again appeared to answer the charge of maliciously damaging a house at Waiheke, the property of Robert McLeod. The case had been partly heard last week before the Resident Magistrate, and adjourned until to-day. Mr. E. Cooper appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. James Russell for the defence. Owing to the Resident Magistrate being occupied with his duties as Judge of the District Court, the case had to stand further adjourned until' Friday. Nuisance.—Ellen E. Ellis was charged with a baeach of the city by-laws, by allowing impure matter to remain on her premises in Hopiitown-street. Mrs. Ellis explained that the man who was to clean the place had disappointed her. .The Inspector explained that the offence was a very flagrant one, the premises being in a very filthy state, and he: should press for a penalty. There were six. witnesses supoenaed, in addition to the In- ! spector and his two assistants. Only three of these claimed expense?. A fine of 2s 6d,' and costs £1 7s 6d, waa imposed.

PAPAKURA R.M. COURT.— Tuesday. [Before Thos. Jackson, Eaq , R.M.] : S. Walker v. F. Neallie.—Claim : 123 9d, rates due Hunua Highway Board. In; this case the amount of rates had been sent to the Board two days after the summons; had been taken out, and the question of costs;of summons had been reserved from last Court day. Judgment was now given for the Board for the amount of costs paid, on; the ground that the rate was payable on the Ist November, 1882; and the Hunua Board; had in January and July last notified by ad-; vertisement in the Weekly News that immediate proceedings would be taken against; persons whose rates remained unpaid. Walker v. Gilfillan.—ln this case, which had been withdrawn on last Court; day, an application was made by defendant's solicitor for 10a 6d costs. The Court:: held that as defendant did not appear either personally or by solicitor, and had intimated his intention not to appear, even had it the, power to grant costs, it would not do so.— : [Own Correspondent.] ' j
