THE UNION COMPANY'S EXPRESS BOAT. The new screw steamer Takapuna, built by the Barrow Shipbuilding Company for the Union Steamship Company, was launched as already stated by us, at the beginning of Augußt, and on the 4th went down the Clyde Kiver for a trial of Bpeed. Amongst those on hoard.her were the Hon. G. McLean, Chairman in New Zealand of the Union Company; Mr. McAlister, the company's inspector; and Captain Jones, the commander. Having embarked her passengers, the Takapuna proceeded to .the measured mile, and made a series of trials of her speed, the result of which went to Bhow that her highest speed was 15"1 knots, and her mean speed 14'6 .knots, which was considerably O7or the guaranteed rate. The vessel is 220 feet long by 32 feet broad, and 18 feet 6 inches deep ; tonnage, .870 register. She has two engines (provided by the company .who built the vessel) of 39 incheß and 68 inches diameter respectively, and .39 inches of piston stroke each, and indicated 2500 h.p. Steam ib generated in two double--ended steel boilers, with twelve furnaces. The vessel was constructed under the direction j ■fo:i behalf of thß owning company) of Mr. | Dirling, assisted by. The woodwork is beautifully finished,, and capitals and mouldings are richly ironzed. The same Btyle of decorations is -adopted in the " social-room," which is placed over the saloon. The " smoking-room," reached from the same entrance, has a flooring of mosaic, while the walls are in marble, with jloral decoration, the capitals and floral decollation here being aIBO bronzed. Built for the New Zealand coasting trade, the vessel ia provided with accommodation for SO first-claBS and SO second-class passengers. Each room is nicely finished, provided with lavatories, and lighted by Edison's system of incandescent electric lighting, which is carried out by the Glasgow branch of the Brußh Company, and which is in übo throughout the ship, used also, of course, in tho ship's masthead and aide-lights. The passengors' rooms also contain lifebelts, and. printed instructions in each room show how thoy are to be put on in case of necessity. The dynamo for supplying the electric light is driven by a Westinghouse engine, furnished by Messrs. Alley; Mcliellan, and Co., Glasgow. This vessel is steered by Messrs.
