i'AUUA Bay. A socrAi, gathering was held in the-Psblis Hall, on she occasion of its anniversary, oa Friday, September 14. Tea was first jhitaken ot, and after that dancing commenced and continued till the early hourß of the morning. Several songs, contributed by .Miss A. Aubry, Messrs. Mallabond, Boss, A. All wood, and Whitham, and a duc-t by Mis 3 MeLeod and Mr. 3. Peace, contributed much to the enjoyment of the evening. There was a very good attendance, and the takings were very satisfactory. They will allow a balance to be added to the hall funds. Owing to the very fine weather experiences duriDg the. past "week, the orchards are all covered: with blossoms, and give promise of much fruit if favoured with line weather,— [Own Correspondent, September 15,] TVAEPU. A special meeting of the Library Commil.fea was held in the library-room at seiei>. p.m. on the 12th inst., Mr. H. Matthews in the chair. The Chairman read a telegram from the Rev. : Mr. McKenzie Fraser, announcing that: he would deliver a lecture in the library.on the 26th inst., the subject,"Br. Chalmers." The rev. gentleman's intimacy with that great man, being a contemporary, we anticipate a crowded house to listen to a living actor in the great drama that brought about the disruption of the Established Church of Scotland. The Secretary read a letter from the Secretary of .the Waipu C.C. to the committee, requesting them to grant them the use of the library to hold a concert and ball in aid of the C.C. The application was granted, the the entertainment to take place on the 17th October. - ■.- • The induction of the Rev. Mr. fMcLean into the charge of this parish is to take place .'on the 1 26th inst. The Rev. Messrs. Mc.Kenzie Frasev, Munro; and Ranciman are to perform the duty of inducting Mm. The pew rents were disposed of on the ,12th inst., and the supply was not eijnsl to :to the demand. . TE KOPUEU. A new store is to be shortly erected on thd river's edge, in froDt of the Telegraph OfSce, away from the great stacks of timber which caused ita destruction during the late fire. The Kopuru will shortly present a greatly improved appearance, and perhaps (as has ■happened in so many other cases) be all the bettar for the burning it got.. . A service of song, called Mothers Last Words," took place in the Hall last Digits The reading was creditably performed by Mr.. Barclay. .. Mr. 'Matthews accompanied the sii;gers on the organ. Mr. Philips the singing, which was really very pleasing. The . choir was composed of the Snadayschool children and the Kopura choir. At the close of the singing, speeches were by Mr. Matthews and the Kev. Mr. Hit A* cock, appealing for help on behalf of tut Snnday-schoo). A collection was made, which realised a considerable sum. Tne audience was fairly numerous, and listened, throughout with marked attention.

A sewing-bee, in aid of the church basar ■ to be held in three months* time at Aratapn, has been established here, and meets weekly in the library, under the leadership of MrsHitchcock. Unlike some meetings of * similar kind, this one appears to be devoted to real practical work. Gossiping & rigorously forbidden.
