CORRESPONDENCE.

| SUNDAY DRINKING. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I crave space in your columns to draw the-attention of the authorities to a disgraceful sight, which came under my notice on Sunday last, at the corner of Kyber Pas? and Symonds-streefc Just aa the people were coming from church, and the footpath was crowded with ladies and children, three things, in the shape of men* were to be seen staggering about dead drunk, and using most filthy language..*:, Now, there cannot be any doubt as to where these men got the drink from, and yet the sale of drink on the Sabbath day is prohibited. It is really too bad if people cannot walk the streets on the Sabbath without having their ears assailed with fiuqh filth, and at the time there was not a policeman to be seen. It is not the first time such scenes have been witnessed in the same locality* 1 hope you will publish this letter, so that tlioae whose duty it is may prevent such conduct in future; Thei e is something wrong somewhere.—l am, &c., B. R. RE LAST MEETING OP WAITEMATA .. :*, COCNTY COUNCIL. .. , " """ '' TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —In the interests of the ratepayers of the various ridings in County of Waitemata, permit me to draw attention to one or two matters which require explanation. 1. That the County Council baa decided to strike a "•separate rate of id in the £ over all ridings in the county, save and excepting Takapuna; that Takapuna, beiDg wealthy, can provide for its own wants. 2. This being carried out (and I see nothing to prevent lit), it virtually means that the Counties Act is hung up so far as Takapuna riding is concerned, and that the Other poor ridings will have to bi-ar the whole burden of supporting the Waitemata County Council. 3, When the County Council proposed this " separate rata" to the various ridings, it was solely on the grounds of economy, and that " each riding " in the county would be rated by the Council at 2d in the £. 4. From What I know of Takapuna I am. disposed to think that, as a district, it is singularly well advised at a'l times in its ovpn interests. Takapuna riding practically denounced this County Council system as subversive of its interests, and withdraws from the county. Most ratepayers have, I believe, considered the county system barren of results for some time past —a hollow mockery. It is most likely that other ridings, after careful investigation, will arrive at the same conclusion, and, as in County Eden, hang, up the Counties Act entirely, and leave the complete control to the properly constituted local Highway Boards, than which I know of nothing simpler, better, or more economical in the colony.—l am, &c., Reform.
