THE GOLDFIELDS.

Last - Find (Te Aroba). —This company's treasured holding is situated alongside the Queen and Premier claims, and for a continuation of the lode of the latter ttands an excellent show.. It iB Under the superintendence of Mr. Peter PergußOn, the resident director, who has started work to prospect for. the Premier lode, which there is every reason to' anticipate will only take a short time to ! have in hand, and as the 3000 shares reserved for the company's benefit have all buen takun up, places the company in funds. The following mine manager's reports were received yesterday :—: : i ; .......v ~. , Eukkka. (To Aroha). —The reef in rise continues to iook well, but has been hard to breakioat j.duriug this month. The rise is now, up, ; 24 ,feet. I expect shortly to get better, workingCcQuntry. The crushing, dirt from-.winze', continues to show gold freely, "golds; being}, Well distributed, through the Btpne.'3.:;(from;;footwall to, hanging wall. The quartz obtained from the,,winze for the last .10 feet;,is better, than any. I have yet Seen in your mine. Inverness (Te Aroha). — I commenced work Ou. Monday, 10th instant; got the site .of battery, pegged, and. the levels taken for the tunnel. % Cut. ..and squared down, a face ready for, L the.contractors to commence driving. ,y:>Mr. ? Adams, the battery manag-r,. says he will be able to get our ..trial parcel through next.week without fail- , - ; Extended. —The ground along the leader on the. haugingwall side has improved very much lately in tlie last few feet. . BuiGUT. ; SMii,tt,—There is nothing fresh to report from the mine. ' I am stoping and getting;. quartz. ; No., specimens coming to hand..,]ustyet ; s .only. a;few stone showing gold- occasionally.;.--,lam in hopes to get some stone soon. . Akmy (Te Aroha). —I have been prospecting further, jto,;the south-for the No, 3. and discovered what I believe' to be the outcrop of this.reef. in the .Te Aroha portion of your niinc: ; It is a well-defined lode, about three feet .thick,* and,s i can get -a fair prospect all through, it by pounding with the pestle and mortar,' ,'lti,is., my: : intention to trace tins reef further.to the southward, as I believe it will improve i:n that direction. Seymouh.—l have stopped the driving of the cross-cut for. the present, and started to rise on No. 1 and what I think will prove to he the specimen' leaders. The reef is a nice body of quartz, from 1 foot to IS inches, I have seen good dabs of gold in a few stones, and hope soon to be able to open up a payable block of ground for Stoping. The distance I.Will require to rise to connect with any of the other workings will be about 100 feet. The rise on the Specimen leader is up about theisame-distance as No. 1. The ground here is very much broken with a large watercourse, and. the leader is broken np iu coDse-quehce:i-;jLhope to be away from this broken country .with'" a few more feet of rising ; in fact, ono portion of the rise is in a more solid and ;. the i! leader is very much im-proved.'-.;;;;:Thiß',leader should junction with No. 1 with about 20 feet of driving. I have Started to drive for.the junction. - ; r on No. I reef is now down about4sfeet; the gr./uud in the bottom is getting better, both for. gold and working. As,l mentioned in my last that the country in ..the; eastern : end»of. winze was looking better for" gold, I am pleased to say it is verified, for goid has been seen in several p. : aces from one end of the winze to the other, and about Stbs. of stone showing good large dabs of; gold has been obtained from quartz which had.been broken accidentally with a hole in dig-' therefore > I think it looks premising for. the prospects the new block when opened up, as the gold ia evidently going down. There remains about 25 feet to sink to feach the required depth. There is a great deal of gas escaping from the reef, but as there is a good, draught conveyed d wn the shaft causes, no' inconvenience to the men drive on the No. 2 reef is still in good country, the reef being about nine inches .in top of drive and fully 15 inches in the bottom, and still containing good mineral, although no 'gold was seen the last breaking down. The drive at No. 4 level has been cleaned out and' repaired up to the face, a distance,of 170 feet from cross-cut. It will I requiro widening about 2G fewt back fr; m the face, which.wili be done in a couple of shifts. vl?kep,«LkvjsL.oko'<s.—The drive ,on the bangingwall branch of the cross reef has extended a distauce of 14 feet seaward during the-wick. ; The reef for the first nine feet was rather, broken up; but in the face of the. driyr) now it is about two fe.:t in thickness, '. It is also more compact, and the quartz is of a more kindly nature ; but no golds has been Seen in it yet. Stoping ia being continued iu the footwall branch of the cross reef, also the hangingwall and footwall leaders ; ; bu"*. there has not been frinch gold seen' in any of them, except a few pounds of specimens that have beeu obtained from the fifth stope on the footwall leader. No, 1 winze is down a distance of 20 feet. A few pounds of specimens have been received from here, and colours of gold have been Seen fairly through the quartz every time., it has beeu hrok-n down. No. 2 winze is down, a distance of 16 feet. The reef is not so,- well defined in the bottom of the winze as it was upwards; but colours of ■ gold were, seen yesterday in a small ...leader 'striking into it. The country at the 640 feet levrl still continues good, but .the.ro is no appearance of any leader yet. The men have been stopped part of yesterday and to-day on. account of smoke coming down from the. Caledonian workings. If the fire is not out in that mine before to-morrow I will try abd get the drive closed up between the Tookey cross-cut and Caledonian shaft at the 400 feet level, eo as to allow the men iu thie mine to get down to work. Crushing: 15 head of stampers are employed 16 hours per day,, but the quartz that has been crushed has been poor. There. is a little improvement on it to-day. ; ' la* s Tia.Eaß' *h, —own correspondent. 1 . Thames, Wednesday evening. Thk Mine Fires.—Mr. Hicks, manager of the Caledonian, has built a clay wall in the cross-cut leading to No. 2 i-hafc, the seat of the fire ; alst one in the cross-cut to Howe's tribute, and covered over No. 2 shaft and all other outlets! and hopes by this means to smother the fire. Two meu, while budding the wallr, were overcame by gas, and had to bo brought to the surface. Thk D -Ki* Level Cross.<—Comm.unicatioo with the Caledonian at No. 4 level haviug been Closed up, the men resumed driving at the 640 feet level at six o'clock this evening-
