MORNINGUIDE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SOIREE.
Tiie inaugural soiree in connection with the Morningsiae Presbyterian Church took place last evening, in the Mount Albert Hall, and was in aid of the harmonium fund. There was a large attendance, the tea tables having to be served in two relays. The Rev. R. Soramerville presided, and apologised for the absence of the ministers invited, i.amely, the Revs. R. F. Macnicol, (5. B. Munro, aud D. Runeirnan. He also Stated that the Church had purchased a harmonium at a cost of £45.' The remaining speeches were of a very brief character, the programme being principally,, of a musical character. Addresse* were given by the Kev. Mr. Thompson, on "The Benefit of Working," and by Messrs. R. Skeen and J. Buchanan, who congratulated, the rev. Chairman on his. restoration to health, and the Presbyterians of Morningside on the steps they were now taking. • St. James's Church choir were present in full force, under the able conductorsip of Mr. Culpan. The following was the musical programme Chorus, " Day Dawn," by the choir; 6ong, "The Tar's Farewell," Mr. j Armstrong; duet, "Gathering Mowers," by Miaaes Maokie and McMillan, which ' Was well received; chorus, " Smile,. O, Sun," choir; song, " Tit for Tat," by Mies Culpan, who was encored, and ; . responded with " Who's Thai: Tapping at the Garden Gate?" Bong, "Scotland, I Love Thee," Mr. Carter. Li.ttlo Miss Thompson, aged four and a-half years (the daughter of the Rev. Mr. Thoinp on), then gave a piano- ] forte solo (sacred), in. a highly creditable style, considering her tender yeard.. Tbe chorus, "Beautiful Spring," by the choir, concluded the first portion of the entertainment. The Becond part commenced with the song, "The Liiid o' the Leal," by thQ Rev. Mr. Thompson, accompanied on the pianoforte by Mrs. Thompson. The duet, " Cinderella," by Misses Culpan aud Barton, was encored, and the young ladies repeated the last verse. " Summer Showers" was well render> d by Miss McMillan, aud in response to an encore Bhe sang " Auntjg." The choruß " Spring's Bright Glances," by'the choir, was well received; song, "Pretty Jane'' by Mr. Joseph Hannah, was encored j the duet, Dream of Me," by Mioses Culpan and Maekie, was tastefully sung, and the chorus, "Sweet and Low," by the choir, brought the concert portion of the entertainment to a close. Mr. W. J. Hees efficiently fulfilled the duties of accompanist. Mr. Finuh proposed, and Mr. R. Skeen seconded a vote of thanks to the ladies who gave the trays and presided at the tea tables ; to St. James's Church choir and its conductor, Mr. J, Culpan ; and to Mr. Ree.s, who presided at pianoforte. The vote was carried by fceclamation. The proceedings closed with the ' National Anthem.
