NEWS IN BRIEF.
A sitting of the Native Land Court is being held at Kaiapoi, under Chief Judge Macdonald. Sixty men are temporarily out of employment in consequence of the fire in the mines at the Thames. The Hon. W. Johnston, Minister for Public Works, will proceed on his visit to Great Britain in March next. The deer on McKellar's run near Tapanui, Otago, are increasing rapidly. The other morning a herd of not less than 34 were Been. The number on the estate has now reached 150. Up to September 12, 103 applications had been made from the unemployed for work at the Addington workshops. They are to be employed at stonebreaking, at 2» 6d per yard, and are to receive 4s 6d a day for other labour. A meeting of the Christchurch Milkmen's Protection Society was held a few days ago. One of the rules ia as followe:— " Any member found adultering his milk, shall, upon conviction, be excluded from thia society." Mr. Dauiel, M.H..R. for Wallace, has been on the Thames on a visit to an old friend of his, Mr. John Cartwright. Mr. Daniel promised to assist the Thames members in any way in the House when votes were required,-
The disciples of Isaac Walton, in Wellington, are looking forward with joyful anticipation to the opening of thu fishing season, which commences on the Ist of October. Good sport, ft may be anticipated, is in store for expert fly-fishers, as the Wainuiomata stream is stated to be literally alive with trout.
Commenting on the Bishop of Wellington's remarks to the Synod in reference to the General" Church Fund, and His Lordship's view that the objections to it were not of a serious character, tho Wairarapa Daily says :—"Thia ia a mild way of regarding a scheme which has broken down, and which is generally looked upon is an utter failure,"
